Metro Area Minnesota Fishing Reports & Ice Conditions

Recommended Posts

Now I haven't seen Indy this year but knowing what I know about it based on my experience out there last year, I'd think your efforts would be better on the bays on Tonka for a week(s) then head over to Indy. Well at least that is what I'm planning for. Good luck!

Just got back from checking ice on a small lake by my house and it was about 4" thick. It seemed pretty safe intel I put a few holes in it. With this cold front coming I'm probably going to try fishing it over the weekend.

i was just out tonight and checked it it is a solid 5" untill you ge by the south west corner there is a shap drop from 5" to about 2" the ducks keped it open late. by saterday i will have every intension of fishing the hole just becuse of the fact that there is no snow cover to stop the cold from penetrating the ice

I canoed Wayzata bay three weeks ago on Sunday... doesn't mean it isn't safe by now though. There are bays that are fish-able. Tuesday I went but only felt comfortable on spots where we had 5-10 fow. Today I hit a west metro 130 acre lake with a 30 ft depth . Got to fish a little deeper 10-18 with bare min. of 4" of ice. Stayed closer to the 5-5 1/2" closer to shore. Then mid day a few guys came out and basically started to b-line it straight across without checking, we hollered at them and they went ahead while drilling. They made it across so that that for what its worth but i know that portion of the lake was open a little over week ago. Like I said they did check but imo not worth it. If your gonna go play it safe.Have fun with what you hook, perch today and one walter.

Just came off Marion. Less ice than I had hoped for, but we settled in with the portable on 3.5" of solid black ice. It's a mixed bag to be sure, but even the white stuff took 4 solid hits with the 8lb ice spud. Perch were hungry tho! Nothing on the tip ups but we left early maybe...

Head north a bit and try Rush Lake. Pretty decent Crappie actions with occasional Walters. Snagged a 42" Northern there 2 years ago with a Crappie minnow and 6 lb test. But I wont ever bet on that happening again smile

Good luck and stay dry

Am I correct that the wind usually comes out of the North nowadays?

If that is the case, would it make sense that the weakest ice would be on the South side of most lakes since the waves are more likely to be pounding that shoreline keeping it open the longest?

Any thoughts?

For city lakes, Phalen and Como are both under-appreciated. Owasso is reliable, but fished pretty hard. Peltier (up in Centerville) has been fun for me whenever I've fished it, but I haven't tried it since rumors of a winter kill 2 years ago. Investigate that one. I have the most fun trying little lakes that all the other guys overlook, but then I'm not usually trying to find walleyes.

Not really - but that sounds logical.

Normally when a low pressure system is approaching we'll have wind from the SE, once that passes then winds from the N or NW. (it all depends on where the center of the low pressue is moving from and to)

In the spring the ice on the N shore errodes faster as it's in the sun that's getting stronger each day. Couple that with road salt. Think Spring Park Bay on Tonka.

Hey Ebass, hope you are doing well. Haven't been on the site actively for quite some time. Haven't fished much in the past year. Wife had a heck of a honey do list this past summer. Painting the entire house pretty much killed the summer. Put the black lab down in August because of cancer. Spent the fall playing with the bow, rifle, and the new muzzleloader. Hopefully getting out on Tonka this coming weekend if she gives me the green light. I will put up some posts if I have any luck. Haven't fished for so long I almost feel like a newbie. Maybe we will catch up with you on Tonka this winter?

I'm going to Tonka tomorrow pikeguy. Sorry about your lab. Our family had a doberman that was put down because of cancer. She was a great dog and still miss her.

I never made it to Minnewashta this past year. I didn't fish as much as I wanted to either. One issue after another. Story of my life.

You don't have PM enabled? I tried, but that's not an option in the menu for your "handle".

Just checked a small pond in CG and by no means should this pond reflect any other body of water. Mostly I just went out because I just had a new carb kit put in my mag2000 (runs better than it ever has). 4-5 really solid inches of ice with 1-2 inches of really choppy ice at the bottom(assuming that was from the rain) but it all seems to be coming together now and soon with the forecast. Heading to Ravine lake in CG tommorrow. It's always the first place I hit the ice every year. Almost a tradition and usually can get a handful of smaller crappies and gills a short drive from home. Stay safe and happy holidays!!

Bgreen, about 4 years ago one of the kids that I was coaching at the time pulled a 22 or 23 in walleye out of there. 3 days after that him another kid pulled a 5 lb one out. I have heard of a few others but nothing in the last 2 years. They didn't keep either so you may have a chance. Suppose to be a 16ft hole in there.

Was on Spring Bay this morning - everywhere I looked there was 5-6 inches of solid clear ice. It's scary looking but safe for walking. Caught 1 respectable Northern with no other action to speak of.

I think most all the members of HSO were out on Seton bay today. wink

Everyone was having fun though, between anglers, dads with their kids, broom ball players, skaters, hockey players, a paraglider, and even a motorcyclist, it was quite the crowd. Many metro sized sunnies were caught. Life was very good.

7" of ice, 3" of white ice on top of 4" of black ice.

Tech, it used to be a dnr rearing pond so you can expect a few to be left. Ive seen a couple 20"ers caught a couple years ago but not in ice. One of these nights ill bring the porty out and jig for em.

7 inches of crystal clear ice on Tonka this morning and thankfully didn't see any cars on the ice. Set up in 18fow next to a rock pile but it was just continuous perch no walleyes. Saw two cars out on lake Riley this afternoon.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
