Metro Area Minnesota Fishing Reports & Ice Conditions

Recommended Posts

Thanks Acemac. I'll be out on Wayzata bay on Friday night with my brother in law. He's from England and loves the ice fishing experience. We're both trying to learn the sport, but need all the help we can get. Thanks for your suggestions and answers.

Was out on Wayzata Bay this morning. Fished in 22 FOW with a good amount of action. Plenty of little perch to play around with and a few small walleyes to add to the pot. They seemed to hit really hard for short periods of time and then pretty much shut down for an hour or so, still a fun morning on the lake.

I am new to this forum and to the area and was hoping someone could give me a good idea where to find some good sunny fishin. I have bass fished tonka this summer and spent some time on Medicine and Parkers lake but never on the ice. Any advice is appreciated!

I have been out numerouse times this year on tonka in anywhere from 7'-25' and have only located perch? Somm of which have been niced sized on Harrison's but no Walleyes. Has anybody ever had any luck on Harrisons for Walleyes... there is a nice- sized hole out there that I figured i could get on em on the drop off but no luck? Don't need exact locations just wondering if Walleyes are around there or not?

I would try Black , definetly on the smaller side, but will give you plenty of action.

Prior access suitable for driving a mid-size car out? Not talking ice depth, more of steepness and/or large bump getting on? Might tangle with the crowds in the morning.

NOT. Go east or south for walleyes. Based on my experience fishing Harrisons area the last 9 years.

Just got back from BE at around 630pm. Fished with a buddy and his father. First location, fished from 1030am to 1230pm in 12-24 fow, marked fish from time to time, but it was still very slow. Second location fished from 1245 to 6pm, we were very fortunate to land directly on top of them in about 27 fow, and they seem not to be spooked. There was a constant fish column from about 12 to 26 fow. We were using fathead minnows and artifical minnow heads. We must of caught 30-40 fish each from about 1pm to 6pm, all crappies. They were on the small size, but weeded through and kept the larger ones. All the crappies that we caught ranged from 6 inches to the biggest of 10.5 or 11. We kept anything above 9 inches, with largest being about 11. I ended up bringing home about a dozen and a half eaters. Fishing was awesome, but fish were very finicky. Had a great time. BE Lake was like a mad house out there today. We fished about 150-200 yards from everybody else. Great day, especially with the weather being around 25-30 degrees.

Crappie Limit for one person is 10, sorry if I misread, but as I read it you took 18 for yourself and no one else

Found a couple of walleyes for dinner on Friday night - Saturday morning with my 12 year old daughter on Waconia. Both were caught on the rattle lines with a fathead. We went out using the In Towne Marina road and found a spot where there was a "hole" in the weedbed in about 15 feet of water. My daughter caught both fish (with dad's help and our friend Roy's help!) She had a blast! We missed a couple more over the night. Couldn't get the panfish to cooperate, but we had a good Dad and Daughter time on the lake. To top off our time, my daughter won some tackle for her fish at the In Towne ice and dice game. We went home and had fresh walleye for supper with my wife and son.

Here is some pics from the close to home trip:

Here is my daughter with our friend Roy and a nice 21" walleye, she didn't want to hold it herself!

Here is a pic of the sunrise on Saturday:

Finally, here is a pic of me holding both walleyes my daughter caught. She wanted to take my picture with them since she didn't want to hold them:

My daughter also joined us during our trip. That's why we took home 18. We had an awesome time. We ended up having 4 others joining us out on the lake, and we all had a great time developing new friendships.

Man the gills on Green lake are non-stop. I didn't get the women on any keeper sized ones but it was a 3 2 1 hit all day.

Prior Lake - Fish Prior this morning from 6:30 until 10:30. Tried for Crappies early with out luck. First fish caught at 7:45. Ended up with 6 keepers, 4 gills, 2 crappies. Lost about a 10" gill at the hole and lost about a 12" crappie at the hole (transducer). Again, the fish were very finicky. Had luck on the bigger fish by fishing two feet above them and aggressively "thumping" my jig.

Go vikes. I am actually hoping they win the Super Bowl, because then Favre will retire, and we (Packers) can get back to kickin Viking tail!!!!

I was out on Carson's tonight and I got one suspended crappie about 10 feet under the ice. Nothing on the bottom wanted to eat though.

Decided to try Tonka saturday and got my limit of sunnies in about an hour and a half. Probably caught sixty fish and sorted 8" plus to take my limit. Fun time really despite all the crazies out there on dirt bikes and snowmobiles buzzing my shanty.

Acemac, we were set up on the edge of a dropoff, bottoming out around 24 FOW. Got onto the ice and set up around 6:30, we've been debating heading out earlier as it seems that as soon as we get set up the fish are already biting.

Redneck, you were right, the limit for crappies is ten. Its hard to keep track of all the limits so I always keep a fishing rules book in my bucket or tackle box with me. Free book saves you alot in DNR tickets.

Man... It's a shame a fish like that had to die. Personally, that beaut should be enjoying the rest of it's retirement right about now. Usually, a replica is there so the fish can be observed and released. That fish is probably 20 years old.

Don't mean to harp on your parade, it is a nice fish! Just saying.... I know they are hard to say good bye too smile

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
