Mississippi River Pool 4 Fishing Reports Pool 5, 6, 7 , 8 & 9

Recommended Posts

Saturday was pretty good for my uncle and I as well. Didn't get started until around 9:30 or 10 due to crazy lightning bolts raining down when we pulled in the landing. Boated 32 fish from 10-2.

Two 23"ers were the biggest to go along with a couple 19" saugers that were bloated. Counted 11 that would have been keepers. All C and R. Nothing really huge, but fun day on the water. Good way to start the open water season

Crazy, we didn't see 3 fish caught all day. Goes to show somebody is always on them.

Yesterday was brutal for us! Cold, high pressure, strong north wind, water levels went way up from the weekend, flow was fast, and water temps dropped to 38* in the main channel. Even the shallower flats barely hit 40. We pitched blades and plastics and were only hit once. Called it quits around 1 after battling the current and wind.. Water was over the banks and flooding the timber.

We had a slow day out there.Nature boy found a mix of different species but numbers wernt there for us.We used a three way rig towards the end of our outing.Seemed to to better with that setup vs jigs/minnows and lures.

Any reports from Wednesday - Friday this week?? I was down on tuesday and fishing was SLOW. We got 10 fish between 3 guys and fished HARD all day. River had come up a good 3 ft since i was there last and there were sticks and twigs and trees everywhere. Seems like the fishing is always bad when that is the case. Headed down tomorrow and wondering if anyone has had any luck since tues.....

Was out on Monday from 10:30-7:00 but got blanked - water was really flowing and the wind was awful. Don't think I saw a fish caught all day, the few bites I did have were light, nothing but chewed up tails on the minnows.

Novice question- fished pool 4 with the crowds by the dam for the first time a week ago last friday and had a fair amount of success in terms of numbers and size (some decent, some eaters). Jig/minnow and Dubuque Rig.

Do you guys expect a fair amount of numbers of walleyes and saugers camping out in the slack water areas near the dam next weekend (WI opener) or might they disperse by then? I have zero grip on their spawning patterns as you might be able to tell.

Debating pool 4/dam or a couple other lakes in St. Croix county for the upcoming weekend as my wife is due with our second in a couple weeks... need to get out before the baby comes and still stick fairly close to Lakeville.

From what I have read the fish are pretty much still in the middle of the spawn. Some may be spawned out, but that just means they will wanna EAT soon. I think next weekend should still be pretty good as long as the river doesn't come way up with all this rain(which it will). From my experience, whenever the river is on the rise and debris and mud are thick in the water- the bite dies off big time

Thanks, that makes perfect sense. Sounds like the Hayward area lakes are still 3/4 frozen so we may have to grind out the muddy river. Please reply or PM me with any lake recommendations to chase eyes this wknd within a couple hours of the twin cities.

I'm thinking about heading down to red wing to target some eyes Saturday. What does the water level look like with the recent rain? Also, any tips would be greatly appreciated. I'll report after, thanks

Walleye and sauger fishing was tough last weekend. Hopefully the cooler weather changes the bite for the better this weekend.

Did the last deep freeze lock up the tailwaters enough to get out on the ice and fish for walleye and sauger?

My experience is that it did not get quite cold enough for long enough to make for safe ice-fishing below the lock and dam at Fountain City, Trempeleau, or Dresbach, but I would be happy to be wrong.

Hit the water this last Sunday. What a sweet feeling to be in the boat again. Fishing was not so sweet. We saw 4 or 5 other fish caught in our 6 hour outing and I had a gorgeous 17" on a moxi. Good luck to the guys in the tourney this weekend. As always the folks at Evert's where beyond great!

Water temps varied from 36.1 to 37.2 and the current wasn't to quick.

I was out both Saturday and Sunday. The daytime bite has been tough with the water so clear yet. I did pick up a few after dark each day though.

played hookie yesterday and got dwn to P4

it was a cold windy day but the sun was shinning and we're fishing.

very tough/slow/light bite, boat control was difficult due to wind. we only managed to put 15 fish over the sides and kept 5 for dinner. biggest was 2 18' saugers

most fish were caught V-jig/minnow, orange was best, only 2 fish on plastics, 25-30'fow

go as slow as possible, seemed to be the ticket

my bud got a couple bonus fish as well

lost another one bout same size next to the boat

Has the bite slowed down on Pool 4? Pool 2 has been good for the last month. Water temp got up to 49 before the cold snap and I think they may have spawned. It was dead Friday and Saturday.

The spawn is going on right now on pool 4. All the males I caught yesterday were milting. One female appeared spawned out, the other still holding eggs. Water was 48 degrees. The walleyes are biting, just gotta sort through the pike and white bass.

Here's the 2 big girls from yesterday...

I had some vacation days to burn up so I took the day off and hit up pool 4 today. The bite wasn't fast and furious but I did scratch out about 15 saugers and a few walleyes. Got them jigging oystershell and pro blue moxies and pulse r's in 20-24'.  I'm already looking forward to the bite in another month or two.

By no means fast and furious but great to climb into the boat again for a couple hours.  We must have been a little rusty though. I bet we missed 10 bites between the 2 of us.  Excuse the thumb in the pic.

I was out today as well. The walleyes eluded me, but I did find a school of nice perch and some saugers. The saugers were in the 23' range with all the shad. The perch were in 14-16'. Got the saugers jigging a oystershell paddletail and the perch pitching a 3/16 oz silver blade.

I made it back out today for a few hours, but I could not find any decent eyes or sauger.  I did snag this beast of a quillback if that's what it was? I've never actually seen one in person before. At 23 1/8 inches long it had the potential to be a state record.

BassWhacker you caught one of the coolest and one of the least common fish in the river.  That is a blue sucker.

Very cool thanks Jared.  It didn't quite match the pics of a quillback, but I couldn't find anything else that looked close online.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
