Was out there yesterday, not much for walleyes but we pretty much caught saugers at will in the 30-60 foot of water range. Nothing real big but tons of fish!

"There ARE fish in under 30 feet too"

Yep, and lots of 'em.

Averaged over 10 fish an hour for two guys today. Every single one of them was from less than 30'.

Biggest eye was 18", lots of small sauger and eyes too. Caught a suprise 4 pound sucker as a "bonus" fish smile

Had a 22-24" walleye shake off at boatside before the net-man was ready frown

T'was a little chilly out shocked

Got out on Monday fished from 10 to 24 feet caught fish in depths mostly around 19. The bite wasn't fast but enough for a good time. Here is a picture of Brad with a couple for the frying pan. full-36600-30295-image.jpg

I can also say the ring worms out produced everything for keeper sized fish in my boat. I would like to say it was great to see the dad out there fishing with his kids on Monday they were a hoot to listen too.

Good luck guys and gals !!!!!

We also commented on how much fun they were having. I laughed when the daughter was protesting when her father insisted on getting her picture with a tiny sauger?? They also caught fish for the cooler as well. We were catching in 24 - 30 fow. Everts 3/8 hair jigs were good to us. We quit at 1:00 when the wind kicked up. Looking forward to warmer temps, sunshine and the big girls.

heading down to the dam tomorrow to try some sauger fishing.... anything i have to do special with the boat motor since it will be below freezing? first time fishing this early

Tilt the motor all the way down until all the water is drained. Some like to start the motor for a second to make sure all water is out. Make sure you let the boat, trailer, motor drain into the river and not onto the ramp. The folks at everets will appreciate it. Good luck and report back with results.

Good to hear. After posting yesterday i thought,.............i should head down there myself so i did. Fished noon to 5 and caught 25 +/-. Lots of little guys but found 3 for the frying pan. Minnows worked much better than plastics. Nice to be back in the boat again!!!!!

depends on where you launch, but there are several accesses within a 10-15 min boat ride of the dam. also size of your motor and how many no wake zones you go through make a difference.

Everts is the closest to the dam, its on the wisconson side... thats only a 5-10min trip to the dam from there with zero no wake zones to go through, but it also has limited parking depending on how high the river is

What are the names of the landings you are talking about and are they decent landings?

Link to comment

There are two landings in RedWing, one on the north end and one on the south end. Coville and Baypoint. Both great landings with lots of parking, and free.

There is one under the bridge in the Wisconsin chanel and of course there is Everets.

Baypoint may be un-usable for a while ... This landing has sort of a "harbor" where you launch from and my guess is there is still at least a foot of ice in the harbor. Not sure though, i rarely ever use it.

its more than likely ice in the baypoint bay landing, once it is ice free, be careful the landing gets icy from trailers coming in and out. i found out the hard way, slid all the way down the landing backwards til i hit the waters edge! about filled my shorts!!!

i go to everts now, ice free landing all year and its a closer run to the dam. plus a 7 dollar fee

The ramp under the bridge belongs to Island Marina/Campground. It's private and you need a key to get in. The other options are Coville Park, Baypoint Park, Wi Channel and Evert's Resort. All are nice ramps. The WI Channel is the worst of them all because there is no dock and has a rocky shorline. I used it a couple times last week and it was good enough with two people. It does get icy though.

Evert's has the best setup and has a bait shop right there. There is a fee though.

flow is low, and thus the water is clearer for this time of year. very limited current breaks because of the low flow so the fish are a little scattered. we didn't get much pitching blades and plastics on wed. vertical boys were getting some fish, mostly small though. we switched and pulld Dubuque rigs for the rest of the day and were able to catch fish. the dropper jig with plastic caught the most (purple chart tail ringworm was best). i am hoping this warmer weather will dirty the water and bring some much needed flow to concentrate the fish better.

just thought I would try I'm in on the fishing today.although it took us 45 minutes to launch once we got on the water the fish were biting. The walleyes seemed to be shallower in the 17 to 22 foot range and the Sagerswe're out deeper. Plastics were the best for us today although we caught them on minnows and blade Bates

"Is Everets open this Sunday on Easter for launching?

You may not want to go there. When we left the water was raising fast with lots of logs. There was RAPIDS at ramps and docks.

Very, very slow today! We saw 5 fish netted all day (8am-2:3-). We managed one big catfish and that was it. Must be the cold front that moved in on Sunday. Things should settle down and the bite will pick back up within a few days. Good luck!

Hows the flow right now? Alot of debris to dodge? Water running high fast and dirty yet?

Making my first trip to the mighty Miss and really pumped whether the bite is tough or not.. Earlier I had read that people were using small 3/32 and 1/8 ounce jigs. I am assuming the use of larger jigs is now more appropriate with the greater flow of water. But wondering how big of a jig is needed, 1/2 ounce or even 1 ounce? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
