thanks for the ice report JP...look forward to staying with you guys again at the Wig Wam this winter. Me and my buddy were up there in the middle of Oct. in the 3 bedroom cabin (lakeside) and had a blast. Great service and hospitality. Keep up the great work and look forward to hearing more old hockey stories over Bud Lights!

Hey!! It's fun again on the south side of the lake! There are a lot of fish spread out from the south shore to mid lake. Some of the schools have been enormous. Small fish, big fish and in between. Od

I’ve been fishing since Sunday afternoon. Pink/white or gold jig with frozen shinner. Mornings have been slow but afternoon starting around 2:00 has been good. Catching a nice mix of size. 28” is big

Speaking of Border view had to dig a couple old photos up of the crazy bombardier we use to ride out in years ago. Maybe some of the old timers on here might of got to ride in it ?

Fished due north of Morris Gap yesterday and hit the walleyes pretty good in 24'. Saugers were small on average but the 4 walleyes I kept were 16.5" to 18.5". Quite a few in the 13-15" range. Glow orange buckshot 1/4 oz was the only jig I I used all day. Deadstick was ok but jig outfished 4:1. No shiners, just chubs.

We were in 24' right off the border as well yesterday. Just like toddb, hammered litter sauger with some quality walleye tossed in. I used a pink JR glow dropper most of the day. The fish are active and hitting well. We got 9 walleye over 15", biggest was 18.5" & only one nice sauger - got over 50 fish in 4 hours between me and my buddy fishing 3 rods in the portable.

We went out in the ATV yesterday, going out in Riverbend rentals with my dad and his buddy today and tomorrow. Everybody was busy staging shacks, lots of good ice out there, we were sitting on over a foot. Brrrr. It's cold!

Pine Island-We were put into 21' yesterday. Kinda slow day compared to the day before. We picked up about 30 fish, 5 nice eaters, between 4 of us. We were off to the west somewhere, couldn't even see the border at all. We've been promised deeper and further east today, see how that works out.. stir, repeat.

Pine Island-Thanks for the reports guys... I'm relly getting the itch to get up there now. Hopefully I'll be able to make a few more trips than last year, but who knows with the late start we have this year.

Fish two days over Pine Island in about 20 ft. Did well both days Lots of nice 14 to 19 inch fish. Wasnt had to limit out.They ran us out in one of there small rigs they use this time of year. Had about 10 inches on the lake and maybe 8 in the bay. Still cold up there so ice is starting to get very good. Lots of action and nice people!! GREAT TRIP!!

Daily Fishing Report 12-15-09: Today will be bitterly cold with sunshine and clouds mixed, high -4F with winds W at 10 to 15 mph. Tonight will be partly cloudy this evening with a few snow flurries after midnight, low -11F with winds light and variable. Tomorrow will be cloudy skies early will become partly cloudy later in the day, high 12F with winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow night we will have snow flurries possible to start, then snow showers becoming more likely later at night, low 2F with winds light and variable…there will be a 50% chance of snow. Thursday we should see snow showers, highs will be in the mid teens and lows will be in the upper single digits. Friday should be cloudy, highs in the upper teens and lows 1 to -3F. Saturday we should have times of sun and clouds, highs in the mid teens and lows in the mid single digits. Yesterday our houses that we have on the southwest side of Pine Island produced some great quantities of Walleye and Sauger once again. About 95% of the ice fishermen that I had the opportunity to speak with yesterday had great success, which was consistent with the few previous days. All the action is taking place, west of Pine Island and north of Morris Point Gap. From 7 to 11 am you will want to be fishing in 14-18 feet of water and then after that move to 18-24 feet of water till dark. Yesterday one of our ice guides/instructors (Jake “of the Woods” Magness) was fishing in 18-20 feet of water, directly out from Morris Point Gap, which is right where we have our houses at this time, and he was having some great success. The ice thickness out there is currently 11-12 inches and growing every hour. Tonight again should be nice and chilly to add a couple more inches. I was hoping to get out fishing today, but I don’t think I will be able to make time…the resort is still very busy, so I don’t mind not being able to get out. I hope to be able to experience what are guests are experiencing this coming Sunday afternoon when I plan on getting out there and wetting a line with Jody and Vancouver. We look forward to seeing all of you up here very shortly. Don’t miss out on this great fishing that we’re having on Lake of the Woods…come visit us today at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods!

my bro & dad are up there now and said today they only caught 7 fish between 4 of them, They are in 24fow. Any suggestions on presentations I could pass along to jump start the trip for them. Thanks

Just got back, We had the best fishing ever. Caught 8 walleye from 16 to 19 inches. The saguers were from 12 to 16. Had to sort through alot of fish, maybe 50 to 60 fish each day. We were fishing in 26 fow past pine island.

went out in riverbend houses past pine 24ft sun-wed. Sun was hot monday was slow tues was hot wed was avg. Seem like red was the best color 4 jiggn 50/50 on jign vs deadstick with a gold jig/eye dropper 4 the dead stick. Caught more 17-19" eyes on this trip than any other. no monster eyes though with a couple 20" ers as the biggest. also caught a pike,pout, and 4 nice pearch. ice was 12"

Three buddies and myself just got back from the Morris Point area. Fished half a day Tuesday and limited out. Easily limited out on Wednesday and Thursday too. What a great trip!! I have been up there about a dozen times and it was the best fishing I've had to date smile

We fished in 23FOW, the fish were aggressive and would hit just about any presentation. I would say 2/3 of the fish came on an active jigging rod with buckshots/darters/raps, with the remaining fish taken on a deadstick or under a float.

We camped on shore in the wheelhouse for the first couple of days (and fished out of portables), and on Thursday afternoon the resort let us pull out the Icecastle with my wheeler. So we got to fish our last 24 hours in comfort smile

We landed close to 200 fish and drank over 200 cans of beer (along with a bottle of vodka smile ) A great trip with some great friends!!

Looks like our third nice day in a row here on Lake of the Woods. Temps have been in the low teens the last few days after nearly a week of sub-zero temps. There is anywhere from 10" - 14" of ice out from Pine Island and Morris Point on the East end of the lake. Traffic is still being limited to ATV and sleds, but the resorts have been running small SUVs pulling enclosed trailers w/ guests for a week now.

Fishing out of Border View Lodge has been good this past week. I picked up one group from their house yesterday who said they had "the best fishing they've had in the last 4 years." Another house said it was real slow. That's fishing I guess. Good numbers of 14-18" walleye have been coming in w/ an occasional big fish in the mix. Saugers will again be of no shortage this winter. However, they are running small due strong year classes the past few years. With some sorting you can find a limit of good 12-15" Sauger. The best fishing has been in 23-26' of water, but the shallower depths can be great in the early morning and late evening. Word is the snowmobile trail up to the Northwest Angle is being staked this weekend.

Fished in 24-25' over Pine with very good results.

I had a slower day yesterday but Carl was catching nice fish 50' away. He released a 22, & 19 with several nice saugers while I played with dinks until about 2:30 when the eyes showed up at my house. Caught a dozen 14-17" eyes by 3:30 and really regretted having to leave. Seemed like they were going to go till dark.

Got back last night from a few days on the Canada side of LoTW. Similar reports as the U.S. side with lots of 10-13 inch saugers with 15-18 inch walleyes mixed in. We did manage one 28" and two 30" walleyes over the weekend. Also got some bonus 6-10 pound pout which were fun. 15-16" of ice everywhere we went.

Got back last night from long point area. Lots of 15-17 inch walleys on sunday. We threw back 3 times as many as we kept. Monday and Tuesaday were slower but still good, with lots of the small saugers mixed in. We fished in 20-22 feet. Largest of the trip was 26". As reported above, ice was 15-16 inches.

Went out this morning off Morris and absolutely pounded them in 23' of water. Best walleye fishing I have had on the hard water...as far as numbers of fish go. We didn't get any big ones, the biggest was 18" but lots of eater fish. Most of our keepers fell in the 14-15 inch range. Three of us limited + 2 saugers and were off the water @ 11:30 am. Which was great considering that we didn't start fishing till 8:45 this morning. Hopefully it keeps up at this pace for awhile!

What is the best color to be using? I will be up fishing next weekend, at River bend resort, and am wondering whqat is going to be the best thing to be using? I am trying to ge tmy wife inot ice fishing and hoping that I will get her into this, any help would be great!!!!

Gold, pink & pink glow have always seemed to be the go-to colors. Try jigging spoons in both colors. Use a jigging spoon on one and a plain hook on your deadstick. They tend to prefer jigging one day, and the next they will only take the deadstick. Either way you are covered with those colors and tactics.

just got back from the big one. Stayed the 24-today. lots of bites and little ones for action and plenty of keepers in both saugers and walleye mixed with a few big pout. none in the slot size went from a 18.5" with one big guy at 29". FUN! my personal best walleye. fished in 27' area. Left the house and will be going back soon!

MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
