Daily Fishing Report (March 11, 2010): Today will be overcast, high 41F with winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight we should get rain showers early becoming more intermittent overnight, low 32F with winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 40% chance of rain. Tomorrow we should see showers early becoming less numerous later in the day, high 43F with winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 40% chance of rain. Tomorrow night should be mostly cloudy skies, low 33F with winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Saturday should be mostly cloudy, highs in the mid 40s and lows in the low 30s. Sunday should be cloudy, highs in the mid 40s and lows in the low 30s. Monday should be mostly cloudy, highs in the mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s. Then the next few days it will continue to get colder, with even snow on Friday (the 19th) and Saturday (the 20th), which should help us out for next weekend. Today’s fishing report will come from me and our guides. Pink, White and Gold are still the magic colors on Lake of the Woods. Vexilars are not a must, but suggested…I won’t even fish if I don’t have a Vexilar these days. Today our houses outside of Lighthouse Gap in 16 – 24 feet of water did fairly well, some of the gentlemen that I talked to picked up 30 plus fish each, so keep that on your radar this weekend…you don’t have to go as far for good fishing. We just went back to the Reefs today for the first time in a few days and I have yet to get a report, but will post that tomorrow. People are having good success out at the end of Adrian’s Road in 32 to 36 feet of water. The road is still drivable as of today, but please call Adrian’s for the current reports. Snowmobiles are still you’re best bet as of this weekend…there is still snow on the ice. The lures showing the best success rates are the “Gold Disco Ball aka Strobe Jig by JB’s Tackle”, “Charmer Jig (Pink) by Tom’s Tackle, the Pink or White Florescent “Stop Sign”, “Macho Minnows” and “Chubby Darter/Rapala Rattling Jig” (all can be purchased at the Log Cabin Bait store approximately ¾ of a mile before the Wigwam on 172). Use anything that glows right now, whether it is pink or white. Also give the plain gold jigs/Disco aka “Strobe” balls a try. The ice thickness out there is currently 32-34 inches on the big body of water and 24-28 inches in Four Mile Bay. Adrian’s road is open for business, but with the weather, I would only bring something with 4 wheel drive, but as I indicated earlier, call Adrian’s for the up to date report. Fishing has been a tad bit slow the past few days during the mid day hours, but smoking hot from 4:15 to dark. As anyone who has fished before knows, it can’t be gang busters all the time, even if we want it to be. Don’t miss out on this great fishing that we’re having on Lake of the Woods; come visit us today at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods!

JP thanks for posting that report and saving us a step! Me and my crew have been glued to this site for the past two weeks as we are heading up on the 19th. One minute it looks like a bust and the next hour you hear good things about the bite and "ok" roads time will tell.

thanks,

Meat-Run

I went out of Adrian's yesterday, out to 35', had an incredible flurry from 1-2pm, enough to almost fill out during that time frame, kept only 16-19 inchers, nothing bigger than that. Road by the island was getting pretty bad, and a lot of water at access points. Went out of Morris Pt the day before (29'), hot time was 4-5pm. If you are driving a sled or wheeler you're gonna want to wear gortex or rain gear or you will be soaked.

Just got back from Whiskey Jack Flats area.

We fished Wed afternoon, all day Thursday, and until 3pm yesterday.

Our best day was Wed afternoon from 1 to about 4..

Thursday we got 3 fish by noon, did OK mid-afternoon, and 2 fish after 4pm. Saw a lot of fish on the graph through the midday hours as well.

Friday was HORRIBLE. One dink, one 14 inch sauger and one 12 inch walleye. We didnt graph hardly anything all day long.

We fished in 28 ft of water and threw the tackle boxes at the fish.

Morning and evening bite was non-existent.

Man, I have never seen so much water on top of the ice. Pretty wierd feeling driving in 6-12 inches of water for 8 miles back to the shore. Definitely would be an experience for someone who has never been ice fishing before. laugh

Fished out of Wheelers point we had a great time but not for any effort on their part. We rented a sleeper from them and after finding out the bite out deeper and them not moving us at all we took it upon ourselves and went mobile on our own. Good thing its was warm and there were plenty of open holes.Anyhow it was a fantastic weekend of fishing, We came home with our limits of both eyes and sauger. The hot bait was the northland doodlebug's in glow pink or gold with a glow pink back also the northland dropper spoons in glow redfish. Fished in the sleeper about 2 miles off Pine Island then went mobile after the morning bite ended moved out into deeper water. Shack was in 22ft and the morning and evening bite was awesome but would shut down around 9am and would start again at around 5pm so we would move into 25-30ft and the bite was consistent during the day. No big fish to speak of over 24. We estimate we caught approx 130 fish mix of eyes and sauger. Ice is getting soft but there is plenty of it.There was water on top of the ice on Friday when we went out but it disappeared by Saturday. Wheelers is pulling all their shacks and only doing day shacks on a day to day basis. We won't go back next year to them.

Also if anyone can recommend a good cheap motel/hotel it would be appreciated as we are doing it on our own next year.

fished out of zipple yesterday and this am, caught about 80 fish for 4 of us, mostly saugers with a few nice walleyes mixed in. dead stick plain hook, and gold spoons were best for us. wheelers only from here on out was what the boss lady said as we left this afternoon.

Hi mnhunter, I wasn't to far from you last weekend and had similar results at approximately the same times. I think you were outside about 10:00pm. on Friday when I was looking for a place to park my house. I saw a little green light moving around when I turned around near you.

I got a 28 on sat night. Lots of 15-17's and a few slot fish. Lots of action. And there were not any people by me. Another great time on Zippel.

Opener and the week after were good.  Not the numbers we normally get but better quality in the East End.  Not surprised on the weights for the Auto City a.  Usually for us we only catch a few slot fish but we averaged 3 a day for 10 days.  2 overs, biggest 27 inches.     Our best luck was 12-16 feet for quality.  When we went deeper we caught more but smaller.  Bass were really starting to heat up.  For me little earlier than normal.  Found some nice Bluegills the day we went after some panfish.  Dock fishing was as many as we wanted per usual.

We will be up on June 8th for the week. It will be our 13th year in a row staying on the lake.  I hope the walleye are hitting the bobbers by the time that we get there.

Those are some fine specimens. Great job

I'm quite shocked to hear that a walleye tournament is still doing a live weigh in.  Virtually every event these days around here is doing a catch, photo, and release format.   Regardless, nice work.  Congrats.

On the south end...   A great week of fishing with walleyes and saugers caught in good numbers.   The go-to presentation, again, was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 17 - 21' of water.  Various schools of walleyes and saugers across the south shore.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.   Some big pike and jumbo perch being caught by walleye anglers. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers normally head to the lake.  12 - 15' of water is holding some nice fish.   Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes being caught along with a mixed bag.  12 - 25 feet of water.  Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water were holding good fish this week.    The go-to presentation was a jig and minnow as on the south shore.  A mixed bag as is common around the Angle.

Nice work!   Here's two words you hardly ever hear anyone say anymore.  "grateful and humbled"
    • Brianf.
RLG, thanks for the shout-out!     Jeff and I are still trying to wrap our heads around what happened this past weekend.  We are humbled and full of gratitude  for having won 'The Classic' for a second time.     We practiced through all the rain on Thurs and the wind on Friday and found six different spots holding big fish.  Fishing was good on both days with several 'overs' in our catch...but would it hold up for another day?   We didn't know.     On tourney day, we made a long run to our first spot where I lucked out on a 26.5"er on my second cast.  Jeff followed up with a thick 27" er a few minutes later, which turned out to be the big fish for the event at 7.26lbs.  We finished out our limit and weighed-in at 10:30 am for the welfare of the fish in our livewell.    There were some big weights in this event which would have won in most other years, but - for whatever reason - this was our day.  Everything just went our way.  Again, we are just super grateful and humbled by this success.  We also want to congratulate all the other anglers who did well and give a big 'thank you' to the tournament organizers who put on such a great event!

I had a good start to the season on opener. Fishing was slow but consistent. I had four eaters in the box by lunch dragging perch raps. Crappies were biting. I haven't been up since so don't know how things have changed since then, but I'm sure the walleye continue to migrate out into the main basins.

Let’s start this by congratulating Brianf and son for winning their second City Autoglass Walleye Classic last weekend. These guys know how to fish.  We just got to the lake for the season. Chores are almost done and I’m ready to fish.  red(new dog is more yellow)labguy

I tried starting a 2024 Lake Vermilion Fishing Report topic but it doesn't show up on this board.   Maybe somebody else knows how to do it?
