2020 Lake of the Woods Fishing Reports & Info

WingDing great catch I would of done the exact same thing as you,

so be proud of the fish you caught. As for the snow drifts into the plowed roads I've been there done that. I got stuck up in Big Sandy and it was not fun at all luckily I had some nice locals to help me out. Hows driving around with 6-8"s of snow with chains anyone have any experience with that? I just don't want to waste money on something I don't need.

I was Just up 24th 25th and 26th in a sleeper in arnesons we fished two days caught about 120 2 people. Only one slot fish 21" but kept 8 Walleye no dinks we made are own slot had to be 15" to 19 1/2" and we were able to get are limit. First time at arnesons going back in march I've had fun in baudette resorts but more my speed there. I been up 5 times and still dont know what to tip the guides. Any Ideas what other people give would be awesome.

Driving through 6-8 inches of snow with chains is no problem. Driving on bare ice and pavement is hard on them/your truck in my opinion.

I'll be coming up Friday night to get to my wheel house on the ice and I am assuming I will need chains to get to it (its off of a road) and to pull it to a new spot if I choose.

We threw everything at em. We had live shiners and fatheads and noticed no difference in the two It didnt seem to matter the best color was gold it seemed which is pretty norm for LOW

Gold Frosty was pretty productive. The biggest thing for us was bing right on the bottom. When dead sticking if your bobber slipped even so you were a foot off you got nothing. 2 to 5 inches was best. We also kept jigging meaning tried hard to not get lazy set it down pick it up jig it couple times that sort of thing. Overall pretty finicky bite so use a vex if you got one. Hope it helps good luck.

When things are slow...pound your lure off the bottom and make the fish come to you. It turns up the bottom and the bait fish will start checking things out, which will bring in the bigger fish for a little snack. It works for me...hopefully you can see similar results. These are just little tricks of the trade.

I have a fished l.o.w many times in 30-34 feet of water. I always have to put some small ones in my limit. I pull them up slow but sometime it dos'nt work. How are you able to do it?

Anyone had any luck on Babblers Road since the storm? I heard the road was closed, but I am assuming it is reopened. I fished 16 mile after the new year and had good luck but haven't been out for a couple weeks. I heard Arneson's has been good. Any luck? Any Depth? Good luck. Should be a nice weekend for fishing.

Fishing report 27-29th out of a sleeper at Walleye Retreat in 31'. Wednesday fished half day caught 20 (5 keepers, one perch). Thursday caught 74 (28 keepers, only kept 6), biggest 18.5". Friday fished 2/3's of the day and caught 45 (13 keepers kept 4 to finish limit to come back) 1-23", 1-22", 1-21".

Overall, the best fishing trip I have had at LOW.

Caught half Jigging (lindy gold flyer was the best) and half on set line (gold and pink hooks). Unlike previous posts, I found the best action jigging and set line 2' off of bottom.

We fished last Wednesday and Thursday out of sleds. We managed our limit of walleyes both days and almost a limit of saugers the first day. We also ran into about 20 perch or so and one fat burbot. No slot fish though. We bounced around between a few reefs out by Arneson's and Gull Rock and stayed around that 29 fow mark. Graphed a lot of fish. None suspended however which goes against a lot of other posts. We didn't notice a difference between jigging and deadsticks or chubs and shiners which is also unusual. From my past experiences, this has been a fairly good January up at the big pond. Hopefully February, March and possibly some of April produce good reports too.

A buddy and I fished from noon yesterday to noon today. This was my 2nd winter trip there and his first. We basically left Red Lake on a whim and followed the advice in this thread, paid the $8 road fee, and somehow managed 100+. It's well worth the drive if you have a chance.

Well I fished wed through friday with mixed results. We did pretty decent at Bridges on wednesday. Thursday we went to little oak, Starren point and back to bridges and it was SLOW. We kept maybe ten fish for four guys. Friday we went to a couple reefs by Gull rock and did poorly as well. We weren't marking hardly any fish friday. Maybe we were just in the wrong spots but it was a bad fishing trip overall. The reef bite is definitely not going yet. Snowmobiling across the ice was great, not mucj for ice heaves or drifts. With a gps you could go anywhere.

P.S. we were the only trucks in the parking lot every day.

Fished at the end of Adrian's road in about 35 ft of water 1/30 and half of 1/31, caught 30 total, kept 8, only one of which was a walleye.

Talked to a few houses in the same area with similar results for the weekend. Pretty slow overall.

C10 and ranger20 - where you out past Pine Island? I talked to quite a few people and a bait shop and everything I heard was quite slow.

Fished just west of Starren Shoals Saturday afternoon. It was

slow but we got a couple of real nice Walleyes so it was worth

the trip. Nice snowmobile ride over there and back, the lake

is very smooth.

We were 10 miles out at the end of Adrians Road in 35 FOW. Saturday produced about 50 fish but most were pretty small. 9:30 to 11:00 was the best time and I don't thing we got a bite after 2::00. There were a few suspended fish earlier in the day and they were aggressive. Most of the others came in on the bottom and needed a little coaxing to trigger a strike.

Ha that's fishing...

I'm not exactly sure where you were in retrospect to me, but we probably only marked 100 fish, let alone catch that many.

The sauger we did catch were pretty small for my standards and only a few fish this weekend were walleyes.

Curt: In the 10 years that I've been coming up this seems to be the best ice I've ever seen. No ridge in 4 mile bay and from what I've heard no big pressure ridge on the way to the islands as we've seen in the past. Maybe something to be said for the late freeze.

PS Are there any resort houses up on the reefs yet?

Im starting to get nervous. Coming up Feb 18-21. Sounds like the bites have slowed. Rented a sleeper out of Zippel Bay. Hope to God all the walleyes move to Zippel that weekend!!!

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
