Right now I don't think you can hook down around Wakemup to get in there. The winds that stacked ice up by Taylors island was from the West North West. It could possibly move so I am heading up early tomorrow morning if I see a break I will be in the water in a flash. Sorry no big ice breaker waves from my rig grin.gif It looks just like 1996 revisited. My friend went up on Thursday night that year got up on Friday morning and found the ice from our point to Taylors Island. Around 11:00 AM the neibor motored slowly thru the ice flow and around the corner to Black Bay- my friend put his boat in 5 minuets later and got around the corner. It does not sound as promising this year but you never know confused.gif

If you make it down that way I may be in a green Lund Mr Pike 17 w/ a 115 Yamaha on the back. I will be wearing lots of warm camo with one or two others in the boat with me.

Back up plan is to slip bobber fish from the concrete dock facing SE across Wakemup Bay grin.gif

It is all good times up there \:D

Good Luck to all ---- Be Safe

That's not a bad plan anyway. I have seen a lot of walleye taken from that dock if it is the one on Metza point with the bench on it. And a lot of boats within casting distance.

I'll be up in Dago Bay, haven't heard a word about it on this thread- but I'm comin anywhays! Couldn't see a shard of ice on the Eagle Eye today- I had May 9 at 5:46PM for OUT on the board- If I win, stop by Wolf Bay and if anything's left of the prize, I'll set you up with a beverage. Meanwhile, I'll be in the Green Lund Fisherman w/115 Yamahopper.

Good Luck everyone.

Eric from Eagle docks just made it thru the ice pak in front of Greenwood Bay. It took quite a bit of work but he made it out into the open water along the north shore. From the looks of it, ice that is still there is pretty stiff yet. He had a 19' with a 150 and still did lots of backing up and going forward.

I would think that Dago would be open with the current there.

I have a cabin on Pine Island near Comet do you think that I will be able to get out there on Saturday or Sunday.

Posted

Thanks to everyone for the ice reports. Hopefully we will get some more reports today.

Posted

You should be ok getting to Pine. Suppose to have N or NW winds for the next few days so even if there is ice left, you should be able to scoot from Moc Pt along the south shore of Pine to your cabin.

Posted

Does anyone know if it is open in front of Birch Point Marina, that is where the boat is kept for us to get out to Pine Island.

Went to island 1 PM to 3 PM Wednesday.....Ice I saw north of Ely yesterday was stiff....clear to pine.

I have some nice photos...drove from my island to T-5...iced in.

WHITE ice.

From Everetts bay opening ICE clear to Pine..

Big ice.

Open from narrows to Stutz...could not see past that....winds were to big for me to go further with 9.9 shuttle boat.

Cool seeing ice from top of Casino...pure white...big big ice all over big bay.

Big wind blows it that is going to be some huge pile east....think an big.

Be safe.

I think at this point its fair to say that the Eagle Eye camera is deceiving. Even on the west end, just to the right of the view of the camera there is a big sheet of ice that runs from the north point of Schmidts to the north shoreline. Seems to be that way throughout the lake right now.

Yeah I was out there (Head O Lakes) yesterday and you might make it 1/4 mile across the bay but unless things change dramatically the West End is by no means fishable. The last time this happened (1996)my brother and I broke ice all the way into Black Bay opening morning from what I saw yesterday I don't think that possible this year. Only place to really run a boat any type of distance is Oak Narrows from what I've seen.

If you come be safe. Rescue Squad is going to be busy if people try to push it to much out there.

Have a great weekend and remember the fish will be there next weekend but the ice won't!!

does anyone know how frazer bay looks. I need to get from the landing to island 36. So it's a short jaunt but it will probably be dark when I get there.

Posted

Birch Point marine was ice free this am but the ice started just east of Daves and was solid the rest of the way out. Probably should call Dave and check for sure.

Frazer has quite a bit of Ice yet and with a northwest wind that we have I would guess that the landing is probably locked up yet but have not been down that way to know for sure. And trying to navigate this is the dark is just asking for trouble. Come on up but get a room and go across in the morning.....Or time it so you get here after sunrise.

There is an enormous amount of debris in the water with the high water we have. Lots of trees and branches and as soon as people start putting their docks in, we will have dock pallets floating all over the place. Be careful out there.......

Posted

From seeing all the pictures and reading all the posts I would not try navigating anywhere on Vermilion this weekend in the dark! Just my opinion. If you do, go slow and be careful!

Posted

Thanks for the info. I think I'll time it so I get there at daylight. Even though I only have a few hundred yards to go, it would be better to see what I'm up against. Thanks again

Do we have white ice or black ice on big bay. Is there any wind going up there. We have to get to Pine Island we just need to figuire out when.

Posted

Most of the ice in our area is gone. There are a few small areas but should be gone in the morning. Still lots of ice in Big bay but it is passable behind Pine Island all the way to Pike Bay.

Posted

So Big Bay is still complete ice and from the pictures on eagledocks it looks like white ice.

Posted

Yes, Big Bay is still iced in as of 2:00pm this afternoon. White ice too!

Thanks a lot Cliff, Shamrock and everyone else for all the information. I know now that this board does provide valuable info(wish I had utilized more in the past). It seems to me that as of now our cabin is not going to happen, I hope when I wake up tommorow things have changed.

And the forecast is.....oh cr@p

Saturday Night...Light rain likely in the evening...then a chance of light rain and snow after midnight. Snow accumulation up to 1 inch. Lows 32 to 37. North wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.

Posted

Frazer Bay should have a good bite going at that time.

Check out the NW corner! 12' to 16', jigs/minnows or lindys/minnows.

Has anybody out there seen the ice pack on big bay this morning. Will it possible be gone by this afternoon. Thanks for all the information and good fishing.

Posted

Party,

If you are on Pine west of Comet, you would probably be able to get there. We have had a NW wind and are predicted for the next few days, along with snow tonight. YUCK A call to grubens should get you good info

Posted

We are just east of Comet.

Posted

So you are on the south facing shore, ok. You still may be able to get there as the ice has all shifted to the south east, but if the wind changes, you know where the ice pak is going to end up.... With the forecast as it is, you may want to consider next weekend instead.

Opener

It's 7:45am, the full armada is parked at the entrance to the bay and got light snow---- just don't get any better.

Good luck!

partyonpine,

Had a customer that left for Canfield Bay at 10:00 and hasn't come back so you should be good to go.

Not much traffic out there.

The old saying of a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work is true,  but today tested me anyways. First my trailer had a flat. Them my air compessor wouldn't work.  So no way to haul the ATV.  Decided to just walk with the snow free lakes. Get to my spot and my vexilar wouldn't turn on.  I had just charged it 3 days ago.  Caught all kinds of 3-5 inch perch. Tomorrow I'll fix the tire and compessor and get a new battery for vexilar.  Probably go to church to clear my conscious from my frustrations today also.😟  Still better than work though.

We’ve moved 3 times now.  We were too deep up in the bay according to what reports we’ve been seeing.  Plus this cold front has been a bit nasty.  Reports from people on Red were they got slower too with the front.   Pike and perch were fierce though.  Great spot to bring people that just want to catch fish.  But bring lots of minnows.  We had to go get more during our move to Highbanks yesterday.  I never did get to really explore the bay for the better panfish and pike spearing.  Too cold and windy to be casual about anything. we left there with a couple pike over 26 and some 10-12 inch perch.  The couple walleyes we got were 18.5 and 23.5.  I let the 23.5 go but maybe shouldn’t have?  It was the first one.  Protected slot is 18-23 out here.   Went to a proven spot out of Highbanks for last night.  Pike, perch and better walleyes.  Starting to get a decent bucket going with 17.75’s. Otherwise they’ve been in the slot.  They only bite when you’re about buck neked so only 1 pic that I’ll put here.  You’re welcome!

You would be remiss if you don't look at Vortex.  I bow hunt as well and I had a pair of Bushnell something or other and then upgraded to the Vortex.  Amazing how clear and lightweight they are.  I wear them on a bino harness and don't even know they are.  Mine were right around 200 bucks, but worth every penny.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.

Anyone on here fishing Niles Point with a couple of kids last weekend?  You might want to let them know that the 'echo' they returned from across the lake has gone viral!    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEQJ6lmxco0/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet   As of right now, 2.6 million views on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok...and climbing.  I feel happy when my posts on this board gets 12 likes! lol

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.
