LOW get together June 19th update.

Recommended Posts

I stopped by the boat landing at Warroad<BR>last week to check it out. I have never<BR>paid much attention to the "lay of the land"<BR>but it is VERY nice.<P>The second annual open water FM LOW Get Together is June 19th. This year we will be<BR>on the west side of the lake out of Warroad.<BR>The day will involve fishing and eating.<BR>The fishing will be close in (if you want<BR>it that way) and should be very good. The<BR>eating part will be the HUGE FISH FRY at the<BR>campground after a fun day on the water.<BR>Also, you will get a chance to meet several<BR>of the FMers you read posts from every day<BR>here on the web.<P>There are a couple of covered picnic <BR>areas, with grills and pop machines, the<BR>boat landing is right there and so is the<BR>campground. There is a nice fish cleaning<BR>house, plenty of parking for trucks and<BR>boats. This can really work out nicely.<P>Take a minute in the next few days and <BR>decide if you can join the group on Saturday<BR>June 19th (it's only 4 weeks away). In a week<BR>or so we will start asking for head counts<BR>again. It wont cost anything to attend but<BR>we will be needing some things and may<BR>assign some duties. <P>If you dont have a boat we will hook you up. <P>If you have room in your boat you may spend the day with a brand new friend.<P>Earlier Rick Paquin (our fearless leader)<BR>said the date looked good for getting some<BR>of the sites bigwigs at this event. They<BR>have been known to bring prizes.<P>Check your schedules boys and girls and<BR>pencil this in if you can.<P>------------------<BR>Curt Quesnell<BR>NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Curt, I got to speak with the nice lady at the Warroad coc this morning. We can get the larger shelter right accross from the fish cleaning shacks. I had her temporarily pencil it in, and I told her I'd get back to her Wednesday. I have some questions for you so could you email me sometime soon? This pavillion has power for crockpots and whatever else. Alcohol is okay if we let them know. No kegs allowed though. There is a fire ring with this one as well. They have a PA/sound system avaliable for us as well iffin you're gonna do the MC'n and want it!!!<P>It would also be nice to get a head count so we have an idea of # of folks that plan on attending....So iffin you are planning on joining in on the fun post here for all to see!<P>Fisky<p>[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 05-24-2004).]

Fisky,<P>Thanks for your legwork so far. This<BR>place will work out real well.<P>Yes we will be there for sure. I have<BR>no idea at this point how many people<BR>we will have.<P>I have a yahoo email addy for you and I<BR>dont think it is the right one. So instead<BR>of me sending off to cyber space.....<P>[email protected] is my email, send any<BR>questions you have to me and I will try<BR>to answer them.<P>We will need a rough head count soon. So<BR>check your schedules and plan the day with<BR>us Saturday June 19th<P>------------------<BR>Curt Quesnell<BR>NorthCountry Outdoors Radio<p>[This message has been edited by curt quesnell (edited 05-25-2004).]

Two in my party, so I'll have room for two more in my boat. I take it this is a rain or shine event--barring severe t-storms? If people are travelling a long distance, and would like to get in a round of golf on Sunday, I'ld be up for that too. Warroad has a nice course. <P>------------------<BR>Fish on gotta go--JON

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
