With my first boat, I could just put the last roller in the water and the rollers would pull the boat on to the trailer straight even in a pretty stiff wind. My new trailer has the wider "v" shaped roller and the wind seems to blow the boat off the roller. Both trailers are the bunk type, not the kind you'd drive the boat on to. Anybody else have one of these and is there a trick to not looking like a rookie at the boat ramp?

Is it a roller or bunk trailer?

If bunk just back into the water a little further, I drive my boat all the way up. May be just a matter of adjusting bunk angle, space, etc. good luck

That is strange. Is your boat and trailer set up right on the trailer. I know the dealer made some major adjustments on my new trailer with the rollers and it works great. I also added the side roller guides to help in heavy winds.

The guides are the best thing I did for my boat.

I agree the guides are great, and if you have them you should be able to just drive the boat on the trailer.

My boat has to be driven on the kicker motor will make it sit unlevel in the water to make it load crooked if I wench it on so when I go alone its crooked and I have to live with it

I usually drive my boat on especially when I am alone. I hate trying to winch it up on my roller trailer. My boat is only a 16 footer but it is a narrower 80's model blue fin so it is not all that big. I have side bunks that help me with centering. I saw a roller for the back of the trailer that had a centering groove, as long as you hit the bow of the boat on that roller it would position you in the middle of the boat ( supposedly) They sell for about $10-20 at Cabelas. Fleet Farm may have them but not sure. I know for sure I saw them in East Grand Forks. I almost bought one but I decided at the time it was too much work to install it. Unless it is really windy I do not miss the trailer much with my side bunks. A buddy of mine but some small rollers on the front of the trailer that help him position his boat in the middle automatically also. I will try and remeber to snap some pisctures of his set up and I think it would help. He is in wheel chair and has to drive on and off of the trailer after some one else backs the trailer in.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Been so long since I've had to learn how to do this. Maybe I just need to practice a few more times. If you see a big guy cussing at his boat tonight at Big Cormorant, give me a minute and I'll get out of your way. smirk.gif

Dont worry, my 14' boat has to be the worst as far as getting it on the trailer straight... ... My old 18' boat I used to have was easy as pie getting it on the trailer, but this little lightweight boat "wanders" all over the place. I always wind up wet if the ramp dosent have a dock...

Have you tried not putting the trailer so far in the water -- that seemed to help me on both my old 16.5 footer and the new 18.5 footer.

I back in just so the farthest roller is in the water. I think the problem is with the wide "v" shaped roller. The narrow rollers have a lip that the old boat didn't jump. If I'm practicing that means I'm out there and that in itself is always a good thing.

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
