Recommended Posts

This Sat. on Blackduck is the annual Jaycees Fishing Contest. Just giving people a heads up to make some plans. I don't have all the specks, but I do have our tickets. grin.gif

I have to go defend my first fish that I have won the past 2 years. Those darn perch, do it to me every time!

I will get info today, and post tonight, unless Drake has all the info in the office! smile.gif

Looks like the weather is going to be great for a family event this year! laugh.gif

They said yesterday it will be to the north of the landing, near the bar. It sounded like they are already starting to mark the circle area off, and they will set up their stand in the middle. They are not going to predrill holes this year, as many people bring their fish houses and it doesn't line up; but they will be happy to drill holes for those who need them, just let them know when you hit the ice. Also, they bought a 4000 watt generator instead of a 2000 watt.

Too bad there isn't a quilt for you to win again Woodman. wink.gif I will stick with winning the auger again. Can never have too many of those.

Good luck to everyone. A little bit of snow will make for a fun drive home...

Alright, who won something this year? No quilt for you, so what was your prize this year Woodman, or did Tiff win something? Kupcho, another auger?? The other half registered a couple of walleye, but no luck on the prizes in our household. Heard there were about 30 walleye, 10 pike and a ton of perch caught. I asked for info after the contest as to what all was caught, so anxious to see that. Hope you guys did well, and had safe travels in the snow!

I caught a Minnow! Saw lots of fish but they were lock jaw during the contest. Buddies next to me caught 5 perch, but no winners. Had a nice eye come in and smell and then leave. Also saw a nice Gill, but could not talk it into bitting! Fun day, and great to fish it again. Tiff wanted to see the Woodman run for the third year in a row, but I had to retire the boots and sit on my duff! grin.gif

I had to leave my house there due to the roads. Almost hit the ditch on the way up, so I will be up Monday after work to put a new license on it and catch some perch with the kids!

Great to see all the people. I don't understand how they did the drawings for the different divisions. I guess it would have helped if I sould have caught something and actually went up to the tent!

Sorry no PRETTY QUILT this year! crazy.gif

Fun day today fishing on Bemidji managed some eye's and lots of nice perch!

I caught 2 perch and won the big goose egg. Fishing on Saturday morning was excellent. Caught a lot of fish. After catching close to our limits of perch we headed back to blackduck and dropped off the fish. It was interesting going into traffic on our way off the lake at 12. There was alot of vehicles lined up to get on the lake. I felt like a salmon swimming up stream. The turnout was excellent. Even though no prizes were won by us, it was still fun.

Good luck everyone, enjoy the snow.

fished out of the house tonight with the kids and guess what we caught. Nice 17 inch eye's. Took some pics and kissed them good bye until spring time! grin.gif

No perch out of our house but the neighbor managed to get one! The snow was not too bad, just got stuck once because I was making a loop and hit a big drift behind the house. Rocked it loose and got to the house and shoveled a parking spot and a walk way. Had to put on the new license, since it will be there until spring break!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
