The Cold Rush - Saturday, February 17

Matt Johnson

Recommended Posts

Where: Rush Lake, Chisago County

When: Saturday, February 17

We can meet at the West Rush public access at 7am.

Rush Lake needs no real introduction as being one of the best Metro Area lakes for both open water and ice fishing. Rush Lake is home to just about every lake-bound species outside of trout. You'll tie into slab crappies, bull bluegills, jumbo perch, monster walleye, brute pike, and even the occasional muskie.

February is an excellent time to ice fish Rush Lake, and expect to see a lot of nice fish caught throughout the day. The crappies and sunfish will be going fast and furious, and the arrival of a few hefty pike is bound to happen. As evening wears on we'll target the elusive walleye and continue to bang up on the crappies!!

So, if you're looking for a nice smorgasbord of species and ample opportunities of catching some nice size fish, then Rush Lake is the place to be!!

We'll meet in the morning sometime and fish for pretty-much the entire day... or at least until we've had enough wink.gif

So, anyone interested in a little fun out on Rush Lake on the 17th?

Matt,

I really enjoyed this lake a year or two ago when we had the Get-Together/Tournament. For some reason I don't think we used the public access so I'm wondering if you can provide some directions and recommendations for bait shops on the way, etc.. (also---I know you and BDR know the lake pretty well so some bait recommendations especially for minnow types for the eyes and crappies would be appreciated)

Sounds like a long day but one that has crappies, gills and a chance at a walleye would definitely fit the bill. Plus I remember that big gator as well!

The public access is located on the west side of West Rush off of 4.

You can buy bait in Harris I believe. There's a baitshop right on the right-hand side once you take the exit.

As far as bait options go, I would bring some maggots and possibly some crappie minnows or fatheads if you're looking to hook into a few walleye. Shiners or suckers will work on the pike too. We can throw out some tip-ups for the pike smile.gif

I'll put together a little more info next week as far as exact locations and other gear recommendations and post it here...

The beauty about Rush Lake is that there are several different species that are actually willing to bite. Whether you want to target panfish, pike, or walleye, you have a very good shot and each.

During the day I'll probably chase pannies and throw out a couple tip-ups for pike. During the evening I might relocate and target crappies and walleye. It all depends on the day.

Panfish jigs like the Ratso and Shrimpo work great out there, as do Fatboys and Genz Worms. I also like Maynard's Tackle Flutter Bugs, Little-Atom Optic Stealths, and JB Lures Charmers. A lot of choices for panfish jigs.

For walleyes I like spoons tipped with a minnow head, or else a larger Genz Worm. Sometimes the walleyes can be finicky so I'll downsize to my larger panfish tackle. 2 and 3 inch Power Minnows can work well on the walleyes at times too.

It's supposed to be in the mid 20s for temps, so we should have a good day on Saturday...

Sounds like fun I'll be there. So close and never fished the lake guess that needs to change. The public landing on 4 at 7 am correct?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
