I think i know what your talking about elwood.

When i usally go out, i am in a portable fish house. But i understand what your talking about

When I take a trip up to Cass Lake, or to Winne or Alex, we are up there for 5-10 days. When i have my house there, i dont move it alot. It will sit on the same hole for 2-3 days, maybe even the whole time. When i am in this situation, i will reel my decoys up to the point that i have my fake decoy out of the water, but my live decoy in about 2 feet. Where its still not below the ice. This way when the live decoy is swimming at night. The hole will not freeze over becuase the live decoy will keep the hole open. So when you go out in the morning, you will not have to cut the hole open again, or chizzel that baby open. Hope this information help, and if you have any other questions, just ask.

Good Fishing

Do it all the time, leave him about 12" below the water line. The one I got in the house now has been there for two weeks.

Bass and spear and dinner pail thats excactly what I mean. thanks for your input Im going to move my spear shack and try this this week or in the up coming weekend.

one other quick question being that bullheads are leagle bait have you guys tried these I use then for catfish and was thnking that they might work as a decoy. A dnr bioligst told me that pike and muskeys eat bullies in the spring and summer so the thought was their.

I have heard that, but i have never tried it. Reason is becuase i have always had great luck wiht the live decoy, plus i dont know how to caught bullheads in the wintertime tongue.gifwink.gif

BNS I would probly save some from catfishing next year or check with my bait dealer to get some I know that they are tough to catch in the winter but on the lake I spear a lot of guys are catching big bullies thur the ice and I know that cause they leave them on the ice. I hate that.

See, I dont understand that. Why would you want ot take a fish that is doing nothing wrong to anything in the lake, and throw it out on the ice. I just dont understand it. Let the dam thing go. mad.gif

I agree totally the sad thing about it is it will keep happening and if I see who doing it dnr will get involved.

earlier this year I saw about a 4lb northern that someone left out on the ice to leave rot. That really pisses me off thats blatetant disreguard of wildlife.

ELWOOD I keep my live decoy and other bait(tipup and crappie minnows) in a 5 gallon pail down about 5 feet in the hole. Drill some holes in the side and put a rock in it so it will sink, works great!! smile.gif

My friend and I keep the decoy minnows in a 5 gallon pail also. The pail has a lid with some holes punched in it to allow the water to come in. You put the decoy minnows and whatever other minnows in the pail, put the lid on and sink it down the hole. There is a rope tied to the handle that hangs on a hook just above the floor. You hang the rope on the hook and let the pail hang down the spear hole. The decoys are protected, kept fresh, and if the game warden should show up there is no question about what we are doing. Works good for us.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
