My up north trip report!

Recommended Posts

Well let's just say it didn't start of too well. On Tuesday night (10-24-06) my truck was totalled because it started on fire and did extreme damage. I was able to borrow the girl friends dad's truck for the weekend. Head to Bemidji Wed. night. Hunted north of Bemidji on Thursday, got three between my brother and I (very poor shooting.) A lot of bird, mostly divers, we problably seen a thousand or so birds. Friday, not as many birds as Thursday. Friday night headed over to the Deer River area. Sat. morning hunted the Third River Flowage on Winnie, a lot of hunters, but literlly thousands and thousands of birds. There were big flocks of divers and mallards, ended up with 7 (all divers). Sat. afternoon hunted Little Cut foot, some divers, got 4 (this is between 5 guys). Sunday morning, went back to Cut Foot and shot 6 all ringnecks. While hunting Sunday Morning, we watched flocks of 100 to 300 Northern Mallards flying very high and flying south, so they are coming. All in all it was a good weekend, could have been better if the hunters could shoot better, but that is duck hunting. Well the next two weekends, I am deer hunting, so hopefully it doesn't freeze up to soon and I can get back out before the season is done. Good luck to the rest of you the rest of the season.

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow

Looks like you could use a FM hat. 😉    The future son in law prefers the lump coal.  He’ll start it in coal starter over a propane burner, then dump in it his smoker grill as needed.   Congrats on the clean break “over there”.

Should really start a What yeah Smoking thread!    Another fun place we tried when up in Duluth. OMC stands for "Oink, Moo, Cluck" They serve pork cracklins for starter to test their sauces on.

On the east side of St. Boni. It's not too far from me. A friend lives in St Boni and loves the place. I haven't tried it yet.

First time ever going there with the wife. Little spendy but they make some darn good piles of meat! We had the brisket! 😋

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!
