Topwater Tumbled, but…

Recommended Posts

Today marked what I might call (nearly) the end of my topwater fishing at the backwaters. I’m not saying the topwater bite has died all-together, but the area that we fish seems to have about a 2-3 month period where the topwater action is incredible. That period expired last year in August and was certainly near expiration today. We did have 10+ boils atop the water, so there is still some activity, but nothing like it was in the previous months.

I believe the fish transition out of this vegetation rich area due to low oxygen levels givin the decaying vegetation. The water was brown and the current was zilch.

My go to lure of the day was a JB Lures Rattling Glow-Belly Crank 3” Deep Diver in the gold/crayfish pattern. I worked the lure with the rod tip high and intermediate pauses. The rattles in those lures amaze me. There were times today that I could hear the lure rattling as it was coming towards me. Without a doubt those rattles are what attracted the fish today. This lure would occasionally rub the bottom which is exactly what I was looking for.

We also caught fish on plastics, including the new Hawg Frawg from Mister Twister. The 4” version in black/orange did the trick.

No huge fish went boating today, but I took a few pics anyways. I did get the variety pack with Largies, Smallies, and Pikes.
