Putting together a FM LOW trip..............

Recommended Posts

Hey guys Jason again. Last year at the end of the season we had a little ice-off party. We had the grills out there we drilled a bunch of holes so people driving by could come and fish and enjoy a good meal. I served up some good burgers, dogs, potatoes, and other little munchables. And we can't start a tradition and just stop it. So I am sure that we will be having it again this year, probably the wekkend that you guys are out there. So that will be grrreat. We will show you guys a great time. Well I got to go to bed so see ya later guys.

I can't wait. It is going to be a blast grin.gif.

So far we have Me, Leaky, MT Net and Northlander for sure. And possibly ST and Xplorer. Like you said Leaky, hopefully others will jump in too.

Jason - how are reservations looking for that weekend? Are there still houses open?

The forcast is calling for winter to come back tomorrow. YeHaaw - grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif.

That's a bummer. I hope to see you up there anyway.

The price is not bad to me. When I figure drive time from town (and gas for my gas hog), $5.00 x 2 for lake access, bait and motel - then it is not such a bad deal. I skip eating in a restaurant this way to which saves quite a bit.

The houses are great and once I am there I only have to fish - no packing and unpacking, ect.

Ah..... come on Northlander. Going to miss your fish frying expertice. That also means I might have to cook the bacon. Oh Oh, hockey pucks for breakfast again. wink.gif

I don't make a habit of doing these kind of weekends, but it sure is nice after a 6 hour drive to just show up, have the house heated, holes drilled, kitchen set up, and just sit back and fish. Oh yeah, maybe a cold one or two. Heck Jason has to make a living too.

Oh Well - Hope to see ya on the ice sometime this winter.

Jim

Ill see if I can get some $ out of my comp. bank. That still seems expensive to me! $68 times 3 days is $204. Ouch! Thats a lot of Beer, Bait and food. And a hotel.

Steve - They are only charging us for 2 nights. $68 x 2

Can't help you on the beer though, I have to fend for myself.

Bob I may not be able to go. That price was steep to me anyway. I get a room for 2 for that price. $68 times 6 = $408 a night. Boy he better feed ya, bath ya, get ya a date etc. Anyways maybe he can give ya 25% off like he did for the ice series. What do ya say Jason, come down on the price a bit? After all we are all FM members and PRO Staff. I think Ill stay with Gibbons for the ice series though. Its nice to wake up and fish and not drive for 1/2 hr. or so.

Hey guys, Bryant and Jason here. Well we'll tell ya what. Since you feel that 68 per night if too steep we are willing to give your group 20% off. We feel that this is a fair price, compared to all the others out there. We have the best houses on the Lake. We supply everything for you, including bait. We had no complaints last year about the price, because we have such great service. And you can just ask Dr. Bob about that. Go to our website and check out the HAWG that we put Lil Jake on. Well just thought that I would check in and let ya know that we are willing to work with the FMers, and Pro Staff in any which way we can. And we can guarantee you are going to have a great time at our place. Fish On, Bryant and Jason(Southern Slayer and Northern Killa)(Fire and Ice)

Jason & Bryant: Thank you. It wasn't necessary, but very much appreciated. Really looking forward to getting up there. Bob has said nothing but good things.

Jiggle & Gary - Will look forward to meeting you guys. Jiggle can cough up all his Red Lake secrets, ( NO CLAMPS for this guy, though) Gary all his Birch & Vermilion. We'll bring enough "truth serum" to get it out of both of ya. grin.gif

MT - Better bring plenty of Serum, or it'll be Schmidts for you all weekend. grin.gif

Wow thanks Bryant and Jason!!!

I sure did not expect you guys to do that. It is much apprecaited smile.gif.

Sorry I have not been around guys - Jake has been really sick since Friday with a bad sore throat and a temp topping out at 106 each day shocked.gif. It finally broke last night and we just got home from the hospital a couple of hours ago. He still feels pretty rough but gobbled down a 1/4 pounder w/cheese this afternoon and started razzing me about being a better fisherman than I - So I know he is going to be fine grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif.

Yes Steve and Gary, we have room. With you guys plus Jiggle, Leaky, MT Net and me we have a full house. If others want to join in we will have to get another one. Bryant or Jason - are there any more houses left that weekend??? It would be cool to have a LARGE crew up for this. Maybe some more of those IBOT guys will migrate north?

Well I had better get movin along.....................Doc

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
