Putting together a FM LOW trip..............

Chunky,
Appreciate the potential offer, but would stay at fortune bay so the Mrs and Dylan could swim/play while I battle the bruisers (you know, finding that "balance" again) for the weekend. Hopefully the Mrs wont be on-call that weekend.

That's cool. Will I have to sleep on the floor or can I share a bed? You bring the Elk, I'll bring the appetite.

Hey Chunky - The heck with the floor or sharing a bed. (You can always sleep under an unused blackjack table) The real question is: Will the hotel let you grill up some of those Elk steaks in the room? food-smiley-002.gif

Jeez - Hard to believe I'm thinking of January on this 80 degree August afternoon.

Leaky, it is easier to ask for forgiveness, than it is to ask for permission.

or in other words:

Much easier to be an object of scorn rather than an object to adore.

I'M COOKING THE ELK STEAKS!!!

Chunky & Leaky,
Heck yes they'll let you grill steaks there, why do you think they put balconies in the hotel rooms for, the view?????? smile.gifsmile.gif
If the Ely lodge would match prices for a couple night stay i'd gladly be there, but their twice the price and i need a pool for the little guy and Mrs. Fortunatly neither of us finds the casino appealing, if i wanna blow money I just head to Gander or marine general and the Mrs hits eddie bauer wink.gif
Here's to trout thru the ice!!!

PS: Jim, I've been thinking hard about that "muffler" and I think that about all we'd need is something that involves about 100 proof vodka and walla, you'd be out cold by 10pm in your chair with no waking "timmy" up wink.gifwink.gif

Mike, I'm afraid there will be no elk for next winter, the fatherinlaw messed up with his application and wont be going out west this fall frown.gif Will have to do veni steaks instead!

Looking forward to seeing ya up there.

Here's the deal......

I reserved a 6 man sleeper with Gibbins for Friday and Saturday night March 26th and 27th. Bryant did not ask for a deposit and said if we need more room it is available as long as we do not wait to long to arrange it. I know he has a 10 man shack too. I wonder how strong the floor is shocked.gif ?

YaHooooo.......I can hardly wait grin.gifrolleyes.gifgrin.gif.

Don't worry Northlander - I need 6 hours too smile.gif.

Who's in???

Hey MT - We need further clarification as to what the D.A is!!

Anyway, I'd definately be intersted in road tripping up together if you can pull it off. Maybe we can meet Bob in Britt and caravan up.

LOW at the end of March is as good as it gets!!

Why Britt?

If you are both coming up from the "Sh*tty Brown South" smile.gif we can meet at my place by Gilbert and leave the extra vehicles there.

I'm thinkin it will be a short work day on Friday........

Definate vacation day. Glad to see you're in MT. We'll make arrangements when I collect my winnings for the 2nd half of our football picks. grin.gif

Bob - Your right. What the heck was I thinking? It's not like Gilbert's out of the way or anything. Sounds like a plan.

Hey Doc,
Long time no talk to ya!! Wish i could commit but i can't, wont even have a clue if that weekend is clear until after the first on the year at earliest. Will depend on Mrs Xplorers call schedule. That weekend should be a good one tho, i have been up there at that time and had good fishing. If it works out, i may have to try to get a room and sled out to you guys. Lots of ice that time of year, and i've run all the way up to Garden Island before. Always wanted to try the islands (bridges, sisters i think they are) over near the CA border north of baudette.
Leaky, I think that the muffler can be left at home for this one wink.gifwink.gif You can yell your head off out there on the ice and noone will care much grin.gif
Now that the boat is put away i cant wait for opener trout!! Still trying to get a room up in Ely.

Hi Chris,

You are right.....long time no talk! My schedule has been pretty demanding as of late shocked.gif. Not much time for the puter.

I hope you are able to make it up for this one. Me thinks it'll be fun rolleyes.gif.
Bring the ear plugs guys grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif .

Speaking of Ely, I suppose I should drag up the Burntside Bash thread and see if anyone wants to share a room with me. Might be a good idea to get reservations now to make sure we have them smile.gif.

Xplorer - It would be great if you could make it up. When I get the urge to tell a story at the top of my lungs, I'll step outside. Won't bother little Timmy and I'm sure you guys will still be able to hear. grin.gif

Bob - Don't forget the teeth along with the ear plugs. wink.gif

Be sure to reserve the weekend of March 13th on Lake of the Woods.

The Ice Fishing World Championship is taking place that weekend.

It's going to be an amazing time and we'd like you to join in.

I've talked with Bryant and Jason at Gibbins and he's all for it on that weekend. He's offered a 25% discount for the weekend of the 13th as well.

http://IceLeaders.com

PS. The weekend you are trying to plan is a risky one with respect to having open water. Much better to come the weekend of the 13th. Can you tell we really want all of you there. Bob, I'd really like to work with you on this one. What do you think?

Myself, I will unfortunatly (Not) be soaking up the sun and unlimited all-inclusive adult beverages on a white sand beach in Playa del Carmen that weekend cool.gif
I may come back with a bit of eyestrain tho from all of the "scenery" that that area has to offer at that time of year grin.gif

This would be a last minute decision for me as well. Since Dr. Bob spearheaded the LOW get together and has commitments from Leaky and MTnet I'll leave it his hands. grin.gif
Sorry fiskynut we'll have to make it to the LOW forum more often, and of-coarse these little get togethers are open to everyone.. smile.gif I overlooked the ICE Leaders gathering myself but wasn't aware of the date. It would be good to move this back to the 13th and join forces. Hey the %25 off shack rental would help also.

Bob - Thanks for the flexibility. The 13th wasn't going to work for me, and I know MT was looking at some conflicts as well.

Rick - Looking forward to meeting you at the Mille Lacs and Red Lake tourneys. I have a friend who has a house out of Mort's on Red that I'll recruit for the event.

We have been getting a lot of reservations lately. So we are filling up quick. So thats awesome. How did Jakes fish turn out Bob. That was sure a great catch for him. I think that meant more to me than me catching my first big fish this spring. I was happy to see that you guys got that fish when we came there. Well Have a good night and Fish On Jason

Hi Jason - How ya doing??

I can't wait to get back up. Jake and I have the fever BAD. He is really bumming this morning because of the temporary thaw that we have. That boy has got it VERY BAD grin.gif.

The fish came out very nice thanks! He will tease me for the rest of my life, or until I catch a bigger one.......

That lucky little sh*t caught a 27 incher in July too! That is another fish I will never forget. His 5 year old sister lost a tooth at the same time the fish hit!!! She dropped it on the floor of the boat and was crying (rather loudly) about it as the fish was diving under the boat and the wind was blowing us around. Jakey was yelling at her "LIZZY BE QUIET, WE ARE KIND OF BUSY HERE!" shocked.gif After we did the CPR we found the tooth for her. The tooth fairy does come to Basswood lake smile.gif.

Catch ya later - Bob

Nothlander - We're going to have a blast grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif..........

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
