I have fished Goose in the past but never on the ice and I have heard that even on good ice years that Goose is a lake that has springs and the ice is not safe for driving. I do not like to drive lakes that I do not know but if there are cars on the ice are there places you just need to avoid or should a person like me, not knowing the lake, just use the legs and play it safe? Any info about this would be great, want to try for northerns with my sons friends for the day this weekeend. Thanks.

You are right- that lake will eat a car in the best of years. The guy who allows access on the north end will shut his land off if the ice is bad, even if it is in just one spot. If he has it open, don't trust the whole lake at all. 2 spots to be wary of- the first major point on the east side of the lake from the north end and the south end of the lake where it kind of turns like a river. It can be a good lake, but there are many more that have better fishing with better access and conditions. Honestly.

Ok, if I am looking for northerns for size and numbers, where would you suggest?? I am not looking for locations, just the lake. Thanks.

In the East Central area Sunrise Lake is very good. East and West Rush can be good. Some years Rum River backwaters are amazing (don't know about this year, sorry) Stanchfield Lake can be good. Skogman and Fannie have produced some nice pike over the years as well as Pauls Lake on the south end of Cambridge. Good luck!

Green lake and North or South Center in the Chisago area will kick out some very nice northerns, as well as bass and walleyes.

Another lake in the area that is good for northerns is Pokegama in Pine. South side of the island find 10-15 fow and put the bait down 3 feet off bottom(large shiner). The numbers arent quite as good as Coon but size makes up for it. Some days we get 15 flags and some days we just get 2 or 3. Very sunny days seem to be the best over cloudy or ovrcast days.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!
