2-12-06 Burntside report

Recommended Posts

Not a fast and heavy day today, though temps in the high teens with mostly sun and not too bad a wind made it nice to be on the ice.

Between me, Chunkytrout and a brand new FM member who will probably make himself known soon, we probably saw six or eight fish on the electronics. Fished a good spot within sight of Dollar Island. Had another friend there as well.

That new FM guy, on his first laker outing, landed two lakers. No paying the trout gods for this guy! grin.gif I managed one a bit under 3 lbs early, but saw only one fish the rest of the day on the Vex. Chunky had a great day as a guide. Our other friend also caught a 2 lb eater after moving a short distance away between a couple islands.

We were breaking it down and packing it up about 3 p.m. with my jingle bells indicated a flag on my tip-up, which was sporting a dead cisco half way down the water column in 50 FOW. Didn't feel like much at first, but then it started stripping line. A few minutes later, a 6.5 stocker came through the hole.

Not a bad day at all. grin.gif

We're planning to fix lake trout, eggs and hash browns on Wednesday morning for Chunkytrout's weekly boundarwatersradio.com fishing report gig. For those of you who don't know, he goes on every Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. at that Web site, and once in awhile they rack me out of bed to join him.

We'll cook it all up right there in the radio station HQ and mmmmm, it'll be so good you'll be able to taste it over the Internet. blush.gif

Should've saved the eight smelt that came out of the belly of the 6.5. Could've had us a smelt fry. That fish was a FOOTBALL and had no business weighing more than 4 pounds, but darn it was fat. Not only the smelt, but it had vacuumed up chunks of cisco that had come off my jigging lures, which meant it was down there for a fair amount of time ignoring my lures before hitting the tip-up. blush.gif

Oh, and Bruledrifter, I saved the heads from today's catch. They're in the freezer. If you are getting up here again in time for you to pick them up before your project is due, I'll have them for you.

That fish had taken on the look of a perch when they fatten up. Almost had a humped back. Stiffwire, congrats on your first Burntside limit. Glad we could put you on some fish. "Mac the Knife point" shall now takes it's place on our hit list. Can't wait to troll it this spring!

Sniff, Sniff, blub blub........what could have been grin.gif

Glad to hear you guys had a good outing, really wish that me and Jr could have been along. Did end up taking Jr out snowmobiling on both days from home, and watched the Chub lake fishing contest for awhile before hitting the sliding hill for an hour or so.

How much ice did you find this weekend, i imagine she's put on a few inches since the Bash (and more to come this weekend, looks a bit cool)

Never mind.....just saw the other thread smile.gif

Slow weekend for Cashcrews and Capt. Blaine. One smaller trout on a tipup w/shiner, and about a 6 lb. fish lost 3 feet under the hole. And the not-so-elusive eeltrout.

Funny how when you want one, you can't catch one. Twice we pouthunted intentionally and came up empty handed. Chase a trout, catch a pout. Hey wait a minute, that quote's mine boys. I CALL IT NOW! As in "Well you know what Chunky says,". WooooBoy, I'm on a roll tonight! tongue.giftongue.gif

hookset, Dollar is the decent sized island immediately to the north/northeast of Long Island. It's also straight across the bayto the west from the northwest tip of Waters Island.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
