You can fish anyplace you want. Its a big enough lake that you can find some place to get away to.

We will be there.

Agreed, it is a big lake with plenty of spots. How has the panfish bite been lately? Where are most people going out of (contest headquarters)?

I was thinking about fishing the lake tomorrow, but don't really want to be part of the contest. I guess after a long week I am just looking for some solitude. Does this contest allow people to fish all over the lake or is it in a specified area. If so, where is this area at. I am not the antisocial type, just don't want to fish a contest like Island Lakes where you are in a big circle and your neighbor is looking at your lure through his hole.

Watched a guy roll onto the ice there at the bridge a couple of weekends ago after making an attempt to water skip. Are they driving everywhere else on the lake other than that spot? Any red flags that I need to be aware of?

I just talked to Tim at Hi Banks and he said the contest is from 11:00 to 3:00. $5.00 entry and you can fish anywhere on the lake. Weigh-in is at Hi Banks and the prize drawings will be at Eagles Nest. He said they have 24" of ice and you can drive anywhere on the lake (except under the bridge of course!! grin.gif)

Good Luck,

Mud

Steve and Dave,

A couple of weeks ago I went back to the landing with Lota to get our head lamps so we could stay out tell dark. We met a person with the DNR not the one I have met many times on the lake this year. So I asked him if he had heard about the guy from the DNR that went through the ice under the bridge. The guy next to him that I also new said he had not heard about that story. So I sat there and told the story the way I had heard it and finally the guy doing the DNR survey fesses up and said that he was the guy that took the splash under the bridge. Long story short we all got a good chuckle out of it and we were off to fish the rest of the night.

Not that this story has much to do with the topic I just thougt I would share. If your reading this and haven't heard the story it was kind of cute I'll share it with you sometime.

Good luck fishing tomorrow guys. I'll be thinking about you from work.

Take care,

Tom

Dave,

Last I checked there were no vacation spots left open for tomorrow. If we do not make our plans months in advance things just seem to fill up. I'm sure you guys will do just fine.

Take care,

Tom

Well Skippers Kid was the only one I knew who got a fish to register today. Nice 1# Perch only to get beat out at the last second by a 1.14#er. Oh well Tom you gave it a good shot.

Green n Chunky and I batted -200%. 0 for 2 on flags and nothing else to even think about weighing. Oh well he got Gilligans Capt. Morgan hat and a Medium Arctic Cat shirt. Ya like thats going to work. blush.gif I scored a pair of snowmobile goggles and a Perkins Certificate. We did ok for not smelling of anything fishy but some sucker and shiner minnows. wink.gif

Rice Lake tomorrow 10am for the Pre Superbowl Tip Up games. Hope to see some of you there.

Frank it was nice to see ya at Fish and get some of those honey holes from ya. I secretly marked them all into my GPS as you pointed them out. wink.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
