Butch Furtman in the SnoBear

Recommended Posts

I had Butch out in the SnoBear to do a little filming and I'm guessing he will have one for next season. He was totally impressed and we caught a few walleyes ta boot. I had never met him before, super nice guy. The show is on FSN I guess and it should air in a couple of weeks.

Have a good weekend,

Walleyedan

Hey Dan...If you ever find out the exact date on this, let me know so I can check it out! By the way, I'll probably be heading through your area Feb.24th on a fishing trip to the Longville area. I'll try to stop by S&W to see if you're around.

Take it easy,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I'll let you know when I find out. Call me on your way up and I'll try to be there at the baitshop.

That's cool Dan that you got to do a snow with Butch. He is huge up here in the Northland. Used to watch his show every Sunday night, but now not sure when it's on. He seems like a real down to earth guy. Heading back to Red this weekend. I'll keep checking your site to see when the show will air.

Walleyedan...Nice "eye" Tony D caught. The only problem is he thinks he is famous now. He told me he is going to book the talk show circuit soon.

Hey Nate,

He's famous, but not as famous as the "Bullhead Butch". B.F. is a real down to earth guy and I did feel honored to fish with a Hall Of Famer. I will try to let you know when the show will be on, he's on Sunday mornings on FSN at 9:30. Good luck on Red.

See ya,

W.D.

N.C.G.,

Yes, Tony's fish was a nice one (the nicest yet pulled from the Bear). And I know, he's mentioned the talk show thing to me. You just never know with Tony D., he would probably give Dr. Phill a run!!

Later,

Walleyedan

Saw the show, Butch was a little, lets say "unorthodox" in landing his fish, but that second walleye was a beauty. The SnoBear looked impressive as well. Too bad you didn't get a better plug at the end of the show.

I saw the show too. Those were a couple nice walleyes Dan put him on.

I think they did't say more than they did about Walleyedan since the idea of that segment is that Nisswa Marine is a sponsor of the show and they wanted to showcase the rig. I still think Dan got a good mention and such though.

Butch's show is one of my favorite since he fishes a lot of the same waters I do for walleye. My kids always laugh because when the show comes on and the logo is just starting, I always point at them, hesitate, and say "Hello and welcome to the show" Butch then immediately does the exact same thing right after I do. They look at me like "how'd you know he was going to do that?"

Anyway, Dan, that show was ONbelievable! (I watch way too much fishing shows.)

Chuck,

I'm laughing!! Onbelievable is right. He's a nice guy and you are right on, it wasn't about me it was about promoting Nisswa Marine and the Bear. It sure isn't going to hurt my business though, I only have two days open for next winter in the SnoBear. I'm kidding. But you just never know, a lot of people watch his show. It was nice to be able to produce some nice fish in a short window of opportunity (4 hours). I'm hoping we can do an open water show this year as well.

Thanks Chuck,

Dan

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
