I'm thinking of going up to Bear/Bean for splake next weekend. Has anyone had any luck (or heard of anyone having much luck) for splake on Bear or Bean Lake lately? This'll be my first time going for splake, so any advice will be much appreciated. (email is [email protected] if you're not interested in giving up too much info)

Also, anyone have any info on ice conditions on those two or similarly sized lakes?

I haven't been to those lakes this year, so hopefully someone else can help you out with an ice (or more importantly slush) report. As far as the fishing goes, I'd start by working edges and points anywhere from 8-15 fow. If that doesn't produce, you could look for them to be suspended over deeper water. I've done well on similar lakes in both types of spots. As far as lures go, if you find larger fish that are biting well, small buckshots or jigging raps should work. If you're marking them but not getting any takers, downsize to something like a mini mite or a ratso. I usually tip all that stuff with a waxie or two.

Those splake are a blast if you can find them, and are also probably the best tasting fish I've eaten. Good luck!
