Recommended Posts

Hi, I was just browsing the site looking at resorts in Waskish, it looks like a real nice set-up you guys got up there, I wish to get in up there, does anyone knwo if any proerty is available us there? How does the spot up there that the Tribe owns look? Does it need alot of work done on it? WHat kind of shape is it in?

Oh yeah, back to the bear hunt, I saw the pictures of the deer hunt.

I was just curious if you guys ate the bear?

Ogema:

Yes, many of the bear hunters do eat the bear.. Are you in the bear clan?

I don't know what the condition of the old Sunset is in - I suspect it is run down, but the Waskish guys could answer that better than me..

Not much for sale. I heard that the tribe was trying to sell one of the old resorts they bought? I would think that all the land the tribe has up in pine island or maybe the land you have in the Northwest Angle would be great bear hunting if that is what you are looking for. You ever fish Lake of the woods Ogema? looks like a pretty nice spot the Red Lake Nation has on Oak Island.

The buildings in the old Sunset and Birch Haven Resorts are in pretty poor shape but you have lake access with a channel, highway access and access on the Tamarac River which is a big plus. The last owner of Sunset in the 90's tried to stay afloat by selling off 1/2 of his land which was too bad as it is limited sizewise now.

The land up by Ditch #5 has potential but is fairly low ground.

Yes they eat the bear. The bear is one of your totums (sp?) isn't it?

Yes I am Makwa (Bear)Clan, I was just curious because I never ate Bear. I wasn't trying to force my cultural beliefs on you guys, just wanteed to know what was done with the bear after you killed them.

Thats too bad about Sunest, I drove by there and it looked like it had nice access, and potential, but as of now they, my Tribe, wont let me in there. frown.gif

I never hunted bear myself - being a "native" to the area (norwegian, not anishinabe grin.gif) I always considered them more of a pest than anything else - especially when they get hungry in the spring. I have eaten bear meat, though, (it's sort of like pork) and have had my share of "run-ins" with them in the woods and around the house.

I think most of the bear that are shot are pretty well utilized - the meat is usually eaten and the hides are often made into rugs from the guys I've talked to.

You still have your trailer and place up there? Maybe you should do some summer rentals of it to help pay the taxes and up keep on it? 👍

The water is starting to slowly go down. From what I can tell it looks like it’s down about 5-6 inches. The wind was terrible over the weekend though. I’m sure many properties suffered damages with Sundays winds. Things are finally starting to head in the right direction but it’s going to take a very long time for things to get back to even somewhat normal.

Stopped at VC last week as well.  Didn't have pizza, but the sandwiches and appetizers we had were good.  The service was very good.  However, that's the first and only time we had been there.

Any other info about VC?   Got kid and and fam coming up.  Been a couple years but really liked it.   Reviews on line still good.   Did Mark just hit on a bad night or has it gone down?   Being on west not a place we go often.

Going up to visit family at Mille lacs 4th of July weekend. Given the current fishing restrictions and the fact that I don’t have a boat, does anyone know any good shore/kayak fishing lakes in the Mille lacs area?

Spent yesterday afternoon wading the upper croix. Water actually seemed a little low. There was lots of floating grass, so my traditional approach of using a fire tiger jointed rapala was unusable. Tried a whopper plopper for a bit, which avoided floating grass better, but I just didn’t have confidence in using it. So since it seemed like the crayfish outnumbered the rocks, I decided to use a weightless Texas rigged plastic craw. Caught 3 smallies, and a pike.

Here's the actual water level as of Saturday, 6-25. It has dropped some but still is 4 feet above the rule curve. This is updated daily; it's just too early in the day for Sunday's data to be posted. You can check it yourself here: http://www.lwcb.ca/waterflowdata.html

@chaffmj, never mind.  I decided to take a cruise on up there today.  Had a couple popple tops in the driveway but nothing I couldn’t clear.  Nice to see the area again.

Ludlows and Muskego both hit hard.  The Dayton place had a lot of big trees down, not sure of structural damage.  Some say a tornado skipped thru that area.  Looking at the destruction, I could believe it.  I feel bad for those impacted by this storm.   Below are a few snap shots of common sights around the area a day or two after the storm.

Mike, was there a lot of damage in the Ely area?
