Hmm, and i thought it was open? I talked to one of the DNR officers on Lake Winni about 2 weeks ago. He said hes been checking people there and on benjamin latley. ??? I forgot to ask him if it was that lake but he said there have been a few good panfish reports from there, but it was kind of scattered.

So is there another benjamin lake that I dont know about? Or is it really open?

You can probably say you are fishing for panfish in there and stay legal, but it is a designated trout lake and that particualr lake is closed to winter trout fishing.

Good Luck!

Labs is on the money on this one. Benjamin is a designated trout lake and is technically closed. Have driven by it a few times lately and haven't seen anyone set up out there.

Also, stream trout fishing on all designated trout lakes in aitkin, becker, beltrami, cass, crow wing, and hubbard counties is closed during winter. This does not include fishing lake trout which are not found in any designated trout lakes that I know of. I'm not sure why this is the rule, but I'm sure the DNR has a good reason. confused.gif I've done pretty well on DTL through the ice in other areas of the state. Maybe they only stock with numbers of fish to sustain a summer fishery. tongue.gif

  • 1 month later...

we just drove by benjamen a week ago and there were three houses out there are you guys sure someone didnt throw some sunnys or crappies or something in there cause i dont think the game warden would let them get by with fishing trout in the winter

Even though it is a trout lake, i know that it is loaded with small perch and gills. I would hope that the ice anglers are fishing for them and throwing back any trout.

I went there this fall for trout and I caught some nice perch.

Thats why I couldnt understand that it would be closed.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!
