I have fished Mud (Quamba) a few times. It has some nice northerns, and a few walleyes and crappies. Never really did all that well out there, but I have heard of some good fishing there. Ann lake used to be good, but I haven't been there for a while either.

I fished Mud (Quamba) last year a handful of times and didn't do that good. Some of the fish we did catch were nice size but hard to locate.

It is a wierd lake. Not much for structure and shallow. There is a little "sharp" break on the east side (goes from 7' to 10') that I have found fish on. It ain't much, but then there ain't much out there to focus the fish.

I was a little late to reading the disappointing news. The GF and I fished mud both saturday and sunday without much luck. Fished in about 7 FOW between 1 and 2ft off the bottom using waxxies. Just a few sunnies and some very small perch. Not much excitement at all. I would have gone in search of more fish but the hand auger in 14 inches of ice kind of detered me from that.

DZ- do you have a place up this way that you go to often? It seems a bit of a drive from Rochester with a lot of great lakes to drive past to get there. If you get up here a lot, try Grindstone, Pokegama, Rush, Ann, Fish, Knife, or a whole slug of different lakes close to Quamba. Don't give up on Mud, either. It can produce at times, but with a hand auger finding the breaklines can be tough. Keep in touch

Yeah, the fishing is definetly better closer to home. The GF has got a cabin on Mud and it was the first time for me to be up there and she doesn't fish at all so I thought we would give it a shot. I prolly wont be able to make up back up there until the lake is thawed. But if I do, I doubt I will be tring mud again. It will most likely be one of the lakes you suggested. Would I have been better off with crappie minnow's or was waxxie's our best bet? Which bait shop do use use up around there. We went to Gerry's in Mora and the guy didn't seem the most informative to us but treated the locals great.

  • 2 weeks later...

I drove across the lake on my way home from work last night and was disgusted. I drove by a fishing spot where someone had left broken beer bottles, pop cans, bag of chips, minnow bag, cigarette butts, jig packaging, and a crappie laying on the ice. All I can say is what a disrespectful and downright dumb thing to do. I picked up the trash in about two minutes, not hard to do. Why break all the beer bottles other then to cause someone an injury or flat tire? I think these kind of people should be banned from fishing/hunting. I wish I could have caught them in the act. I feel a bit better after this venting. confused.gif

Thanks for pitching in and help keeping our resources free of debris and trash. It amazes me at how many call themselves fishermen and then can't take a second and gatehr the trash and put it in a bag!! Here is a thought throw it in your house and clean it out when you get home very easy to do .......THANK YOU for doing your part..the good guys sometimes have to do a little extra work to keep things natural and clean the way we enjoy our lakes!!!

How is the ice up there? I have one more chance to get up there before it is all gone so if it is still good enough I might give Mud another try.

Also, we will be up there all week so if anyone will be fishing up there during the week and wants some company I would like to hook up and trade some story's (not that I have many).

Can't say anything about Mud specifically, but we noticed people were still driving on Ann on our way back from Mille Lacs. The access' are starting to get pretty wet out there. Not going to be much vehicle travel left. Sounded like Lybacks is done driving as of today.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
