Here's a Question for everybody!!!

Does the early bird always get the worm? I'm usally an early riser and when it comes to going to URl there are no exceptions. I usally rise around 3:30 AM and leave Hinck-town around 4 AM. I'm usally fishing by 8:30 am and stay a few hours past dark. Is this the best time to fish right now or should I get there later and stay Later? I guess it's more of a poll then a right or wrong answer. When have ya all had your best luck? Any will help, thanks fellas. confused.gif

Sting Ray,

Here is a summary of when we caught crappies last weekend:

Thursday - 1pm (1)

Friday - 7am-10am (6), 6pm-10pm (4)

Saturday - 3am-7am (4), 9am-11am (2), 2pm-5pm (6)

As you can see there were not any "great" times to be fishing - different days produced fish at different times. We fished out of permanents and portables and found the rattle reel bite to be better than jigging.

Hope this helps.

BJP. Are the crappies still as skiddish as they have been in the past couple weeks as far as never jigging and only using a dead stick or rattle reel.

I think you will always have the sun up sun down bites but other than that it's hard pick a good time on any given day on Red. Heck guys are catching trophy pike at 1 am? confused.gif

I think you can take the do's and dont's book of fishing and just shred it when you hit the shores of Red Lake, nothing makes sense on that water. smirk.gif

there were three of us up there this weekend fri-sun. All our Crap bites were in the am and they were really agressive. Once you marked them on the bottom I just jigged up 2 or 3 feet and they wacked our jigs.

Gopherfisher - we caught 15 fish on rattle reels and 1 on a bobber pole. All of these fish were caught out of Hillman's sleepers. The other 7 fish were caught jigging at the end of the road in our portables. The six fish we caught Saturday evening all came jigging - we also missed several fish that night due to operator error. My opinion is that in the larg(er) villages a deadstick presentation will be more effective. If you are willing/able to move around, drill holes, and get away from the crowds you might find active fish. My buddy and I went out and drilled holes three times and had decent success 1 of those 3 outings. Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I've been to Red more than my share

and can only say I go up there for a good time and for the memories it creates. Point in case last March 25th I met Kelly P at Westwind. The electric had gone out, but the bar was open and the drinks were flowin. It was awesome. I'm sure I met quite a few of the regulars from this forum that night, but for the life of me I couldn't tell you who they were. I used to be the run and gun gotta get your limit. Now I fish for memories, they may not taste as good, but they last a lot longer. just my .02

Great Post Matt! People work hard on URL, and other lakes, to get people like us out there fishing. You are not always going to catch fish, but there is something wrong with you if you don't have fun fishing. Thanks everyone.

Good point Matt, some of the worst trips as far as numbers turned out to be the most fun trips I have had on Red. It's all about the chase, meeting friends, and just relaxing. If you want a bad fishing trip you can sit on a chair nervous all weekend worrying about the numbers...I do that all week, fishing is for relaxing and having fun not numbers.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
