New Ely "radio" station hits the E waves

By Steve Foss

Ely Timberjay editor

There’s a new Ely “radio” station about to fire up.

But it won’t broadcast over the airwaves — you’ll listen to it over the Internet.

Former WELY Radio morning personality Mike Jankovec and Mary Cich, his organizing partner in the Boundary Waters Blues Festival, have teamed up to produce Boundary Waters Radio, which will broadcast only over the Internet at www.BoundaryWatersRadio.com.

According to Jankovec and Cich, online listeners will hear the once familiar voice of Jankovec, who will kick off the station at 6 a.m. on Jan. 16 with a morning show reminiscent of the one he co-hosted for five years on WELY.

Jankovec, who also had a WELY blues music show and worked extensively with voices and radio advertisement for WELY, was let go by the new management last month.

Initially, the morning show will be Boundary Waters Radio’s only live offering, but Jankovec and Cich, who have named their brainchild business Fancy Pants Productions Inc., say they already have local businesses committed to advertising, and are developing a number of individualistic music shows with the help of community members.

“We won’t be going 24/7 for at least a month,” said Cich.

So far locked in are Ely native Russ Albums, who hosts a syndicated radio show The Wax Museum, and Ely historian and writer Michael Hillman, who will record his writings for later play. More local programming will follow.

Jankovec indicated that one of the blessings of the operation is that, controlled by merely two people working closely together, a stripped down management can lead to fast decsions and rapid implementation.

He also stressed that the programs will satisfy a wide variety of personalities.

Both believe that radio in general has become more and more generic and pre-programmed.

“We’re banking that not only do people want to hear about Ely,” Cich said, “but that there are people tired of corporate radio. A lot of Internet people are fed up with it and finding a way to do their own thing.”

The duo hopes to tap into that out-of-town market, which may eventually make up the lion’s share of their listeners and advertisers. While their initial advertisers are local, Cich and Jankovec said there’s no reason the business should ultimately compete for ad share in the long term with other advertising media in town.

The enterprise also will be recording and offering podcasts, so people with ipods and MP3 players can listen in, as well as those with computers. Web cams also are in the works, they said.

The studio, which is located above Britton’s Cafe on Chapman Street, will be where Jankovec also works at producing ads for others, and at sound and video work.

Nor will Jankovec and Cich depend solely on income from Boundary Waters Radio for the success of Fancy Pants Productions. Cich has folded her graphic design and marketing business into the enterprise, and Jankovec’s band booking service and production business are part of it as well.

The pair also stressed that the site will be a work in progress, that what it looks like on Jan. 16 is not how it will look months later.

Is it time for a fish report?

Rumor has it that Mike and others are going to have a web cam up and running before long. If so please put an indicator light of some kind on it so it can be avoided if necessary to protect the innocent or the silly.

We can't make it to the Bash this year as she wants to go to the Winterfest the next week. We'll be up the 1st through the 4th. May see you then as we'll be wandering the park and streets for a few days.

Hey Chunky - When I hit listen live, it prompts me to download a file (listen.pls) vs bringing me to the show. Is there something else I need to do?

Once you download listen.pls, leave it on your desktop and double click it. Then you should hear the show. That worked for me.

I tried that Steve. When I double click the file, notepad comes up and this is what it says:

Thanks for the reply, though. I've been dying to hear the station. Any other ideas out there? I had emailed the station a few weeks back and never got a response.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
