I heard there is suppose to be a fishing contest held in the Alex area in the near future. Anyone else hear of this? Will they still have it if the ice conditions are not favorable?

Any info would be appreciated.

They have a nice contest. Scheduled for Jan 28 from 12-3.

Not sure if I can post a Link but do a search for Ice fishing challenge on yahoo and you will see it. Last year was the first time I could go and it was fun and slushy. Three fish were caught from my hole and I took home a Vex. smile.gif

Two year's ago I took home a Strikemaster with a .53lb perch. It's a decent contest with prizes for the top 100 fish.

I haven't been to this one for a few years, but I did go 3 years in a row before that. It's a great time. Save some $ for some elk burgers while you're up there.

The contest is scheduled for Jan. 28th, however there is some concern over the ice conditions on Le Homme Dieu. The bait shop talk I've heard is that the group will wait until the 18th of Jan. and decide at that time if the contest is a go or not.

Agape

Yep, that's me! Username is a bit deceiving I guess. The name is what my grandpa gave me years ago as a CB handle when I was about 10 or so...came from catching a bunch of smallies up on Rainy Lake one year. I'm primarily a die-hard walleye man, but am getting into crappies a bit too now. The fish is a 29.5"er I got last summer, which I'm proud to say is still swimming...as long as nobody else got her!

For a small tournament oscar lake has a great lineup of prizes. nice fish house for a grand prize, most prizes are on raffle and need not be present to win, there are also prizes for fish caught during the tournament.

The ice fishing challenge is a fun time and set up very well with parking and shuttle service to the event. you can find it at icefishingchallenge dot org

Good luck to all you FMers at this years ice fishing contests, they're a great way to support local charities and to have a great time meeting other anglers!

The Ice Fishing Challenge is a great fun time...it has certainly grown into a first class event. It is now the 4th largest tournament in the state. BTW Ice fishing tournaments in Minnesota draw more participants than all fresh water tourneys combined! (nice piece in the St. Paul Pioneer press on some of MN's ice events)

Anyway...as for the ice and the local tournament. The decision has to be made at least ten days in advance for insurance purposes. For the crowd expected and set-up, I believe they need a minimum of 16 inches...last report I heard, they were about 5 inches shy of that. Here is the info from their website www icefishingchallenge org:

To date: the Ice Fishing Challenge HAS NOT been cancelled or re-scheduled. Our first priority is the safety of tournament participants and volunteers. We are working with the Sheriff’s Department and the DNR evaluating ice conditions. An announcement will be made by the end of the day Friday, January 20, 2006 about the status of the Tournament. Please check back later for further updates.

I know they'll do the right thing....

good luck to all...

I just caught word that they postponed the contest until Feb. 25th. I imagine the 3 inches of snow that fell up there yesterday didn't help things! mad.gif

Yes...it's officially postponed until Feb 25th.

the way this winter has gone, though....who knows how much ice we'll have by then, even.

any early guesses as to ice-out this spring?

Woohoo! That means I can go again. Had to miss last year due to work and was going to miss again. Too bad if it messes things up for them, don't want to see that. But it works out nice for me.

I've been the tournament the last two years and had a blast, didn't win anything, im debating if I'll go this year though.

I wonder if they still won't cancel it... doesn't look like It'll get any colder any time soon.

From the Ice Fishing Challange Web Page:

Alexandria Ice Fishing Challenge Postponed Until February 25th.

After checking on ice conditions and consulting with the sheriff’s department and DNR, the Ice Fishing Challenge officials have decided to postpone the 2006 tournament until February 25th. The safety of our participants and volunteers has always been our first priority and the current ice quality is not where we feel it would be 100% safe. Other than the change of date to the 25th , there are no other changes to the tournament. The 2006 Ice Fishing Challenge will still take place on Lake Le Homme Dieu from Noon to 3:00pm with no changes to the prize package or rules and regulations.

The February 25th date was chosen after it was confirmed that the closing date for catching walleye, northern, large and smallmouth bass, and muskellunge was changed to the 26th of February by the Minnesota Legislature.

Bummer! I can't make it this year. Did catch any fish the last two years, but the hole next to me did. It's a blast, good prizes, good food, good people, good time. Highly recommend going if you can.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
