Jay or anyone else that knows

I stopped by the shop a couple of times and it's dark. What's the story if I may ask?

Deeky and everyone.

The shop is closed. We were running radio adds through the end of December making the announcement. After 7 years serving the lakes area, we decided to drain the tank, pull up anchor, unstring the bow. It's simply a personal family decision...my kids are growing and becoming more involved in a variety of activities...time is at a premium, and my time needs to be spent with my family.

I know this is a disappointment to many who enjoyed stopping in and filling the bait bucket. It is bittersweet for us as well. You will still see me posting and moderating on this board...and I will actually have more time to provide first hand reports. Owl sports in Glenwood will be relocating to a new building between Starbuck and Glenwood, and will be getting into bait and tackle..good news for those hitting Minnewaska...Russ and Leroy have purchased much of the fixtures and some of the inventory.

The rest I am auctioning on line as the season progresses. Alexandria Outfitters has an Ebay store, and currently I am listing Ice fishing jigs, lures, line...in a variety of combinations.

The building landlord has graciously allowed us to keep the archery range set up. we'll have some limited hours for open shooting and after school time. We'd love to get an active archery club going in town to perpetuate the range....hopefully we can rally the archers and get something together...

Personally, I want to thank all of the FM'ers I've bumped into here, on the phone, or at the shop....This site is very special, and I look forward to being able to get out and about and contribute more. To all of our customers....thanks for your support, we learned alot in our years at the shop, and have enjoyed hearing and collecting your stories. It has been a great adventure...that will now continue on line, and in my garage...!

Thanks everyone!

Jay.

Good Luck Jay!

As a resort owner, I appreciate all you do to generate positives for the Lakes area. As a guy who tries to wet a line every once in a while, I appreciate all the info you share on the forum and in your shop. Finally, as a Dad, thatnks for introducing my 10 year old to archery! He spent several nights upstairs at your place.

You'll be missed....I always preferred you guys over Christopherson's. Much more pleasant guys working in your shop. Thanks for all your service and advice. Good luck on the water.

While not real regular at the shop, I'm sorry to see it go as well. But with my first child on the way, I can certainly understand your decision. I think you made a good choice putting your family first. Blessings.

Deeky - is that an Eagle Fly Rod with South Bend Reel in your avatar? Good to see another fly caster in the area - perhaps we'll see you on an area lake one day!

Cottco

No, it's a Pflueger rod with a Berkely reel. Deffinitely not an expensive set up (the reel is from the Berkely outlet in Spirit Lake), but I love it.

Where do you generally fish? I prefer the smaller, quieter lakes, but just got my boat late last summer, so I don't know much more than where a lot of them are. I'll keep an eye out for you, we flyfishers are something of a rare breed around here.

As did I. One thing led to another.... It's a good thing for me you didn't carry tying materials. The distance is the only way my wife keeps me in budget.

  • 2 weeks later...

I will miss the store. If I order something online can I save the shipping by picking it up grin.gif

You are another fly fishing person in the area cool. Sometime I think I am the only one with the comments I get from folks. Have you tryed Smith lake about the 2nd week in June wade right out from the landing for sunnies and bass? Best of luck spending more time with the family that's why I moved here and I will never go back to the rat race if I can help it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
