Lake Phalen - Saturday, January 7

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I will be out on Phalen tomorrow late morning/afternoon, about 11:00 am. If you guys have any last-minute spots you want me to check out, email me at [email protected]. I will certainly report the ice conditions on Friday morning.

Otherwise, planning on being there Saturday about noon with the grill and a table or two......

Jug, good to see you will be out there as the "Grill Master" I am not exactly sure of what the actual turn out will be. I will plan on 36-40 brats, the buns, and the condements. That will allow for two each if we have 18-20 people show up.

I was planning on being out there around 12:00ish and fishing until dusk. My initial plan was to meet at the boat access but there is not a whole lot of parking in that area. So perhaps it will be best to meet at the large parking area by the beach and go out from there and fish.

Still wish we would get a quick cold snap to add some ice but I believe there is still 7-8" on Phalen.

where i fished the ice was ~6"+ with a nice slush coating on top. another good parking spot is at the boat house it has at least as many spots as the landig and they are filled half as quickly.

Is that the lot to the north of the hill and just at the bottom? There are lots of spots there and tables but it seems there is a wrie fence along the part of the shoreline that doesn't end in a retaining wall. Is there a decent way down to the lake from that lot that doesn't involve trampling too much stuff?

I have actually only accessed the lake from the boat access. I guess we will have to meet at an are that is as close to the lake as possible with enough parking. The boat house area you mnetion sounds good

I was going to get out there at 12:00 and fish until around 6:00. Of course anyone can get there as early and fish as late as they would like. Of course if there was hot bite I would stay as long as the stick was bending.

So is it the boat house, landing, or other? Noon sounds good to me, may even get a little shut-eye before I had out after work, but I doubt it.

It's been years since I've been to phalen, where is the boat house or landing, or wherever we're meeting confused.gif

There are three large parking lots next to lake phalen that can only be accessed through the phalen park entrance. Here is a link to a google map for the area:

http://www.google.com/maps?sll=45.268499,-92.974894&sspn=0.093509,0.343323&hl=en&q=phalen+park&btnG=Search&cid=45268499,-92974894,9131562429164855346&li=lmd&t=m&ll=44.988371,-93.051667&spn=0.005873,0.012124&t=k

When you enter the park from Wheelock Parkway, the first parking lot is the beach parking lot. From this lot you would access the lake via the path next to the boat house. Hopefully it will still be snow covered grin.gif You come out on to the lake right next to "the beach" where the large walleyes roam grin.gif

Further up the road there is a second large parking lot more in line with the saddle area of the lake and is next to the activity center building. There is an access path onto the lake through the fenced off area (watershed district shoreline restoration project)from the parking lot. The path is a little steep but not too bad. There should be plenty of parking to accomodate this group in either one of these two lots. I think the third lot is for the picinic pavillion and is too far away(?) So which one should it be, the 1st or the 2nd lot?

I work tonight and will probably get off around 8-8:30 Saturday morning. Is anyone planning on being there around 9-10? I'd rather not drive home between, but will if no one else will be there.

Just curious...

I plan on being there tomorow. Looks like it will be a nice day to be out fishing. MrPike do you want me to bring a can of kraut for the brats or did you have that covered? If I get there early I'll be the guy with black carhart type bibs with a flannel coat looking lost because I haven't fished this lake before. See you all tomorow.

Report:

Was out yesterday evening on the NE side across from the boat launch. MUCH colder than advertised. There is about 8" good ice with 1-2" frozen slush on top.

I am the perch king (about 30 perch) but no eyes. Saw one guy right off the boat launch and one south but that's it.

See you Saturday, about 11- noon. ZaraSpook, I will have some Crown if you want to pop in.

Oh yeah- blonde guy in a green jacket, purple otter sled with patches all over it. Mr Pike, where should we set up the grill and tents, etc? You can email me too, [email protected]

It looks like I'm going to be spending most of the weekend taking care of a sick kid. My 12 year old woke up with a 102+ fever this morning. I might be able to make it out for a late afternoon/ evening bite. How late were some of you planning on staying?

Does anyone have any quality, accurate lake maps of Lake Phalen? The DNR lakefinder map and other map companies that use this data is a good start, but better should be able to be found. My 'Sportsman's Connection' map book and Ron Schara map book simply use the topo information from the DNR site. A 'Fishing HotSpots' map may contain better data if anyone has one.

I'll be showing up to this event. I thought I should speak up and let that be known. I haven't been to any FM get-togethers before, so forgive me if I look more lost than anyone else. I'll park in that first lot around noon and start looking for people. Looking forward to meeting some fellow FM-ers. I'll be wearing a gray coat and gray pants pulling an orange sled with a bunch of gear in it. And my sister and/or brother are going to come too. Should I bring something for the grill?

Sorry guys, but I got my daughters Basketball schedule for January and found out she has to play on Saturday in the morning. I am the coach so I have to be there. Daughter #2 also starts her startup Basketball on Saturday. I might be able to make it but the morning is shot for me. frown.gif

Hope everyone has a good time! I'm sure there will be a lot of fish caught.

Good luck,

Aqua- Thanks for the tally. Wow, looks like a good crowd for the day and the weather looks good as well.

Time- I will be there at from 12:00-6:00 but there most likely will be people there on both ends of that time slot.

Parking- The beach appears to be the best to support the numbers and allow close access. However, if needed it sounds like there are many entry points to gain access.

Food- I am going to run to Sams or Cub tonight and get a ton of brats, buns, ketchup, and mustard. Based on numbers here I am thinking 48-50 brats to allow 2 a piece. There was mention of kraut. I did not have this on the list but it would welcome.

Grill- Jug is the grill master and anyone who wants to toss on some tasty treats is welcome. You asked about the set up point. I guess we can kind of play that by year once we get a lay of the land. I am certain once the grill starts going the FMers will find there way to it.

The Goal- Meet fellow FM members, forge a friendship or two with others that share the passion of fishing. Have fun and try to prove there is a fish or two to be had and we that we actually have the technology and skill to catch one.

Suggestion- If you have a hand held radio, bring it. I will be on channel 7 to match the event date.

See you all there I will be in a Green Eskimo QF II but plan on wondering quite a bit to meet people and check on their success.

Smelly, nice of you to chime in! Hovermn, I'll be running a tad late tomorrow. I have to go buy a pair of dress shoes and pants on my way to the lake. I'm sure I'll get nothing but respect tomorrow morning the way I'll be dressed at the mall. I will plan to be there by 10:30 if not earlier.

I'll probably head out there around 10-11am. I have to leave around 3pm so I'll just be chasing pannies during the day, maybe see if we can't tie into a few slabs or bulls. Where should I look for people around 11am or so? Any specific spot?

I think I'll try the beach area first Matt. I've never fished this lake but to find me I'll have a green Eskimo QFII and I'll be dressed in faded tan bibs and a brown jacket. Just look for the guy that looks like he should be out feeding the cows. grin.gif

The mall!!...yikes!!...good luck. I think I went the whole year with one trip to the mall. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it. I'm thinking I could possibly sneak out around 1:00.

Fishing is still pretty good.  Went with a friend and the dog yesterday for about 5 hours, managed 19 largemouth and 10 pike.  I normally don't take photos of pike but several of these fish were on the larger side and quite thick so they made the cut.  One of these days my fishing season is going to be over but for now the fish are still cooperating.

On our fall trip, we saw many examples of downed trees on Pine Island. Small trees being cut with chain saw and piled. Any insight on project?

On the South End...  Fall fishing on Lake of the Woods is excellent right now.  The colder water temps have the fish snapping.     Walleyes and saugers are being caught in a variety of locations across the south shore from 20 to 27 feet.  Water temps are in the low to mid 50's. Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners is catching a pile of fish.  Anchor up and jig over the side of the boat.  Typically, lots of small fish to sort through but you will get your keepers along with some larger walleyes. Jig colors to consider are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.   On the Rainy River... The river continues to get better and better with more walleyes moving in each week.  Good fish being caught in many sections of the river.  The morning and evening hours have had the best bite. Walleyes are actually being caught using three methods.  Jigging with frozen or live emerald shiners, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.  15 - 25 feet of water has been the norm. Sturgeon fishing continues to pick up as the water cools.  The "Catch and Release" sturgeon season is in place right now.  The river holds a myriad of species of fish.  Crappies, pike, smallmouth bass, suckers, bullheads and even an eelpout or two are being caught up and down the river.   Four Mile Bay is also holding some nice walleyes as they make their way in from the lake.  Various areas on the edge of the current and channel break are good spots to begin. Up at the NW Angle... Another great week of fall fishing up at the Angle.  Walleyes are keying in on various areas with structure.  Points, neck down areas with some current and transition areas from rock to mud are good right now. Walleyes are the most sought after but in the fall, lots of muskie and crappie anglers are around as well.  Good reports on a variety of species including jumbo perch and pike as the waters cool.      Put on some warm fall clothes, make sure your camera is ready and make some incredible fall fishing memories.  There is still time to get in that last fall trip.
