Now the open water season has come to a close( I know the river the river the river). Two questions. What do people use to clean and protect the cork handles on the rods. Also what have people used to clean their rods.

Oh by the way for those who stopped open water fishing in sept. you missed some fantastic bass action right uptil the 2nd week in november.

I use like a 220 grit sandpaper on the cork, warm water and dish soap on the rods, and a Q-tip in the guides.

A light scrub on the cork to clean it, then sandpaper (220 grit or higher) to renew it. If you want to maintain that new cork look you can apply U-40 Cork Seal to the handle. I apply U-40 Cork Seal to the rods I make and then apply paste wax. U-40 Cork Seal will change the feel (very subtle) a little bit, you should try it on a rod you're not in love with first to make sure you're happy with the result. Any rod building supply place should have it, check with Thorne Brothers if that's local to you

A little Soft Scrub will clean up your cork handles very nicely, and furniture polish, like Pledge, will clean and shine up your rods.

if you dont want to have to go out and buy sandpaper or whatever else, toothpaste rubbed into the handles cleans them pretty well.
