Question For CNY Tim

Windy City Walleye Hunter

Hey Tim,

What are your thoughts on the Cy Young? Do you think Carpenter deserves it in the NL? I've got to give it to the kid. He did have one more victory and a lower ERA than Carp, and he played on a team that was clearly inferior to the Cards lineup of hitters. As for the AL, it seems like Bartolo really had no competition though Santana put up some impressive 2nd half stats, he may have blown any consideration in his last start. As for my Pale Hose, I will trade what the three starters did any day over 1 award. In the 6 month baseball season the White Sox had the Pitcher of The Month in 3 of the 6 months with Garland and Buehrle in April and May and Contreras in September when they really needed him. I don't think there has been a team that can claim 50% of the Pitchers of The Month, has there? If anybody will know, I know you will. So my votes would go to Dontrell and Bartolo. How bout you?

Windy I am surprised that your vast knowledge at superior eye for talent did not give yourself your own answer to the pitcher of the month question. I will give it to your though. In 2004 the Minnesota Twins had 3 pitcher of the month awards in July, August and September and the pitchers were Santana, Santana, and ummm.....Santana, when we really needed him. blush.gif

Also, what about Santana's last start blew his chances. Here is his line from the game.

7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K and the Win.

How did that hurt his chances? I certainly understand somebodies argument that he doesn't deserve it this year but you have got to be kidding me if that line would hurt anyones chances.

That Ummmm was a good one.

Without putting much thought into it, I seem to remember an Orioles team with Cuellar, Palmer, and I don't know who else (Flanagan?) or if they were pitchers of the month, but I would take that rotation over quite a few others - past and present.

The 1971 Orioles had four starters who won 20 games--Palmer, Cuellar, Pat Dobson and Dave McNally. Their offensive lineup wasn't too bad, either.

McNally I remember but never would have gotten Dobson.

Didn't that team have 2 Robinson's on it?

Yep, those starters had it easy back then didn't they, with all those closers they could give the ball to after the 5th or 6th - NOT!

Cy Young to be honest I think the personal accolades detract from the tasks at hand.. My philosophy is TEAM WINS! Pitching, Defense and Hitting and playing all 9, and being a good teammate and doing everything they can even when not 100%, the grit, the determination and the mountain no matter how high overcoming it and getting that ring. To heck with stats I say., all I heard was Carpenter's 9.15 era over his last 3 starts and the nay sayers were worried how he would pitch. He might have not been the best the last 3 games but he sure delivered 6 quality innings before the hand cramp. O runs 3 hits and 3 K's.. Now are bull pen all seasom has done this when ever we have a big lead they lack concentration and focus but I still believe they will do the job when it matters and that's when it counts. It's a good thing we have good starters because if we had blown that 8 - 0 lead I was gonna jump on a plane down to St. Louis and let these bull pen screw ups have it. Other than that today showed that Pujols does not have to do it all by himself... Edmonds, Sanders and Walker are still dangerous.

"That's a winner!

BTW Windy it was a freaking slow pitch softball game the way the Palos man-handled the Red Sox. I have always been a big Podsednick guy and for him to drill that 3 run blast I felt happy for em. Congrats on your win as well... Two more to go bud and Heck Ill even do this for you right now! "YOU CAN PUT THE SOX ON THE SLAB.... YES!!!!

Tim,

I was refering to 3 different pitchers who won the award for the year. Although Santana may have been wonderkid that year but he only accounted for about 20 wins. The three Sox pitchers accounted for about 50 thereby inforcing your attitude of team players. I know you did not send the reply to the pitcher question but I was asking you and everybody else chimed it. As for the 4 Oriole pitchers, did they give a pitcher of the month award back then...I'm not sure. Anywho, great victories for both our boys. This is the first home post season victory for my Pale Hose since I was born, back in 1959, WOW.

YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARD...YES!

Fishy,

I thought that Santana got tagged with the three earned runs, according to somebody else on the thread it was Crain. Sorry, my bad! If Gardy did in fact take him out one batter too early then it must have been a brain cramp on his part though it does make for an interesting stat to lead the league in ERA with a losing record! Windy,

I'll take 80 wins and no pitchers of the month versus your 50 wins with 3 potm anyday. As to the Santana 20 win comment, wasn't that a season when the Twins won the division? Must have taken more than 20 to do that so once again the potm has no value -- I'll take the div crown and no potm's any season. Nice that you make Sox pitchers sound so great by comparing 3=50 to 1=20 but team wins and the div crown mean much more than potm. And if you can't admit that a guy who is potm 3 times in a season doesn't have some pretty good stuff....well I guess you're riding that one-way street again.

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.
