Just a reminder for some of you that are new to hunting. Practicing everday before season is great. But as the season progresses alot of people seem to give up on the practicing, myself included. Just to remind you to keep in shape during the season, its easy to get lax. Good luck to you all.

Just a note to staffers. Is the contest on for this year? Will there be a seperate one for archery, firearms and muzzle? If so what does one need in photo if date is not an option?

Yeah I was thinking the same, it would be cool to have a seperate category for each weapon used.

Just a tip. I always keep a few practice arrows in my quiver when I hunt. I always pick a leaf on the ground to shoot a while I'm in the tree as soon as I get there just to make sure of no malfunctions, etc. Plus it's also practice and gives you a feel of confidence for the hunt. Just something of done .

Had a bad hit in the shoulder blade on a nice 8 point buck and after looking and tracking for 2 hours I lost it.While hhunting that same day I had a small fawn with spots about the size of a quarter come by and the amazing part was that it was sporting a pretty nice 8 point rack, and the deer probably only weighed 70-80-pounds.That would be a nice deer to shoot in about 2-3 years.

have some rags during your hunt if you feel you need more scent add some scent to a small patch pass it through the arrow blade and aim at something add scent while you practice shooting your bow on a stand....

I went out tonight from 4-8. Right before dark a doe walked out at 10 yards turned broadside and I released the arrow. It was a perfect shot, she was a little bit quartering away. So I aimed about 6 inches to the left of her shoulder. She ran about 20 yards then dropped. It was about a 100 lb.doe. Not a huge one but not bad for a first deer. Im definately hooked for life. Good luck everybody.

Way to start the season off right Young Gun... Great shot placement to harvest your first deer!!! I hope the rest of your season treats you good as well...

On a side note, coming back from the movies tonight, the wife and I stopped at a local gas station where one lucky hunter was registering a nice bow buck. This deer was also a first for this lucky hunter. A good looking 2 1/2 year old 9 pointer!!

Congrats Young Gun or should I say Young Robin. NOTHING wrong with a doe. It shoulds like somebody has been teaching you well as well as lots of practice.

I was out a couple of wks ago for elk but NO sign. I did shoot a Timber Wolf, yes Timber NOT coyote, first time I have ever shot one of those. I was on my friends farm and he has had problems with them killing calfs, he had one killed and another mauled, his neighbour has lost 3 and another mauled all this year. In Manitoba if U have an unused big game tag U can shoot Timbers. This female came into to the pond I was set up at and she never lifted her head until after the arrow was through her. She gave a small yelp and trotted off and dropped about 20 yds. The hide was a summer hide so of no value to skin out. Only good thing is maybe one calf may have a chance or even a deer or elk.

Lots of time for deer as our season runs until the end of the 1st wk of Nov.

Nice job Guns!

I was wondering how people would do with the full moon and the heavy winds we had yesterday. I didn't see a thing hunting Saturday a.m. and p.m. Went out again this morning and didn't see anything but squirrel after squirrel.

Next weekend I'll give it a try again.

Great job young guns. Something to be proud of shooting a deer with a bow no matter what it is.

Saw lots of deer all weekend. Ended up shooting a big doe to fill a managemet tag. Can't wait till the rut though. With the full moon and warm weather the bucks were laying pretty low this weekend.

One down, 4 to go.... grin.gif

Well, I don't want 4 more. Thats for sure.

Weekend notes from the hunt.

Saturday morning we were supposed to go out for the youth duck hunt, but lightning and rain put a damper on that idea. frown.gif

After a few hours around mid day working on some tasks at the farm, Brandon(my son) and I headed over to the spot where I wanted to bow hunt.

It was very easy to pick out the spot to set up the Double Bull blind. Woods to the south, and on the north was corn and alfalfa. There was a pile of round bales on woodline to the south and on the north side was the seam of the corn and alfalfa.

We put up the blind amongst the bales. Perfect!

Brandon and I headed to the blind at 4:30pm. Talk about hot and the worst mosquitoes I have seen all year. Oh my god, I almost left. Poor Brandon was miserable. We managed to somehow make it for a couple hours. Nothing happening. But Brandon leaned over in the misery and said, "Dad, even though there aren't any deer, it sure is fun."

That was awesome.

About 6:45pm, a deer snorted behind us(other side of the bales) and bolted through the trees. Obviously it caught wind of us. About 5 minutes later, I caught movement out of the right side window, and here stands a doe at 10 yds! But, she was staring at the blind and stomping and snorting. She was onto us as well. Away she went as I raised the bow.

10 minutes later, I look down the woodline and here comes another deer. Right at us. That one stopped about 50 yds away and started snorting and carrying on as well. OK, this is wonderful. Away it went. Now its quiting time, and I am really wondering about my lack of scent control. We walk out of the tent, and a deer bolts from behind the bales AGAIN!! Oh brother. Plenty of action, not enough luck or too much body odor. confused.gif

Today I was hoping that the blind had some time to absorb some natural smells while it sat overnight. It was very calm and overcast as the sunrise approached. Even a light fog. At 7am I looked over and a deer was coming down the edge of the corn towards me. It took that darn deer 20 minutes to cover the ground to get to me, and talk about an eternity. And it went exactly as planned. Well, almost too good. I anticipated the deer to come to a certain area as it made its way towards me.(It had 2 routes it could have gone and both were within shooting range). The deer ended up coming so perfectly, that by the time I had a shot at it, it was less than 10 yds away. It was quartered to me, and if it got much further, it was going to be in line of my "stink". I had a heck of a time seeing through my peep, sights and the mesh of the blind window. All I could see was brown. I had to lift my head and look again before I fired. I took it a tad further back than I would have liked, but I got the right lung and the exit sadly was a part of the intestines. STINKY!

It was a fawn buck, and he only went about 20 yds before expiring.

Oh what fun.

biglakebass-It may have been that they scented you,but i wonder how long your blind was out in the woods before you hunted in it.I always try to put my blind up at least 1 week before i hunt out of it because usually the deer are very leary of it the first few times they see it.Its kind of like changing the chairs in one of your rooms, the deer know when something is different in there room.I hunt on all private land so leaving my blind out is not a problem as far as theft, verses public property.

I hear ya.

I don't have the luxury of leaving it out and monitoring it though. Its on private property, but within view of a road. I wouldn't consider leaving it for a week or two.

Keeping in mind though, 2 deer spooked from behind the hay bale pile. No way possible of seeing the blind.

Da stink got the best of me on Saturday. crazy.gif

It really got me thinking about how many smells a fabric hut could contain.

BLB- What kind of blind do you use?

When I go out I bring a 24 0z bottle of Wildlife Research Scent Killer, hose it down, and put on some cover scent.

Did You not take care of you and your son's scent?

Here is my report: Fun, but Depressing.

Saturday night we didn't see a deer until a quarter to 6. We saw fifteen or twenty different does and fawns, two bucks, Buckzilla is the name for the one, g2's are probably 14 inches tall, they are huge. Passed on the does in range, breaking our promise to whack the first doe we saw, but with him there it was hard to want to shoot a doe. By the way, he came out like he usually does and worked the center of the field all the way down to the pond, by the time he got there it was too dark though.

Lots of turkeys and pheasants, we were de-scenting after the evening and had a doe and two fawns come to about fifty yards away from the truck. Pulled out and they ran between us and the house.

Sunday morning found me in stand by 5 am, buddy mike in the Matrix at the same time, they were already out in the fields, spooked one getting out to my stand. As the light was coming through the trees I seen something that wasn't right on the bow, realized my peep cut through the string, so a brand new Vapor Trail VTX was junk, oh well. Drove to Cabelas, nothing, by the way the guy there was the most unintelligent waste of time, GanderMountain in Lakeville, nothing, B and B in Fairibault nothing, drove up to Sportsman's and put on a Winner's Choice (ugh) to get me through the evening, called Jared with VT on the way back, it will be done Monday (SWEET) hauled my butt back down there, passed Rich4walleyes on the way, get down there at 2:30 to see buckzilla bedded down in the middle of the field, wind being right I snuck around the corn field to get to my stand so they wouldn't wind or see me. 75 yards out. Turkeys were all around us.

Climb up and sit down, without even being looked at and this guy comes down to the fenceline, at 5:30 pm he starts to make shooting lanes. 5:45 he comes back out, 80 yards from my buddy in his blind, has a smoke, totally scents the whole field the deer sneak out between us, he goes back to the car, grabs a stand walks the half mile back out, hangs the stand, walks back to his car, puts on camo and grabs his bow at 7 pm in the evening and totally blows our evening hunt.

Here is the Kicker, he was 387 yards away according to the range finder, not only was he outlined by the tree, you could see his WHITE SOCKS, TENNIS SHOES AND HIS UNDERSHIRT. Get real guy, you just blew our evening hunt and he wants to discuss what "OUR" next game plan, get bent pal. We left a little pissed off needless to say. After having the wind switch to our favor, covering our outs with scents, and re-adjusting stands to accomodate the night before and this guy comes out and screws it up, really really depressing needless to say.

Hunted Saturday and Sunday evenings. Saturday I seen 2 does but nothing in range. Sunday I switched spots and tried my Brother in law's place. The deer were moving to say the least. I had a doe under my tree in under 10 minutes. Could not get a shot at her, but it didn't take long for some others to come in. Ended up having 4 deer come to my tree at the same time...1 doe with fawn, forkhorn, and a 1 1/2 yr doe. I really wanted the yearling, but after drawing my bow and waiting about 30 seconds, I ended up shooting the older doe. 8 yard shot and she ran about 50 yards and piled up. Should be a good eating...I can hardly wait. Time to hunt for racks grin.gif

Congrats Biglakebass, and everyone else, on the deer!!

Was out Sat morning and Sun night, Sat morning I watched a doe and small buck bed down about 60 yards away, after watching for an hour, and getting ready to go, decided to rattle with my rattle bag to see how the buck would react. The minute I started rattling, they both jumped up ran straight away! Funny!

Last night the mosquitoes were about as bad as I've ever seen... Almost glad I didn't have to track and gut a deer out!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
