Hi guys and gals. Just wondering how the bite on German and Jefferson have been. I haven't been up there since the weekend of the 4th of July. I'll be up there this weekend the 3rd-5th. Curious about the bite. Haven't seen much on this site about those lakes for a while. During the time up there on the 4th my brother caught a 11.3lb. Pike and I think we caught maybe 2 eyes and a few crappies. wink.gifgrin.gifcool.giflaugh.gif Any info would be awesome. Everyone's been so helpful in the past. Thanks.

Mike,

What species are you looking to target? I can try to help with what's happening on German or things to try but I won't be able to help you with what is happening on Jefferson.

Let me know. grin.gif

Mike,

For the 'eyes on German right now, I would focus on shallow areas in the SW (in front of church camp and east) and NE (left of the public landing) corners of the lake. There may also be some fish transitioning out to deeper water during the day but if you could find the shallow fish, they will definitely be more willing to "play". For the deeper fish, jigs and minnows or lindy rigs with Phelps floaters and minnows should work and for the shallow fish, casting #5 shallow runnin' shad raps or pitching plastics should put some fish in the boat.

Hey, thanks for the information. I'll let ya know how we turn out. We've put a few 20 inchers in the boat in the past. Have heard there are a lot nice eye's in there but just haven't seemed to find them. We've still had a blast catching fish there though. Thanks again for the info and we'll be talkin with ya. Mike

No problem. Good luck Mike! I hope you do well.

I'm off to the north country this weekend in search for the 'eyes on Pokegama and Winnie. Hopefully the fish are ready to bite up there.

Hey, I was on German sunday morning. nasty out there. there seemed to be a cloud over the east side of the lake until about noon. that cold front that moved in must have slowed everything down. fished jefferson that sunday evening. fishing was slow again. the only walleye caught, was caught by my fiancee. it was 27". 7lb. 6oz. not bad. the biggest one i've actually been close to. a lot of small perch and 2 small pike. that's it, no crappie or anything. oh well. i'd still rather be on the boat and not catch fish then be working.!

What depth were you fishing? I was on Jefferson all

weekend and we had a good bass bite under docks. Only certain docks, however. Several fish in 16-18 in. range.

One 8lb. pike. No eyes. My dad caught one about the

same size as yours a couple months ago on a lindy rig and

minnow. He caught his in deep water suspended. There was

also quite a few night fisherman on Sunday, was that you.

I was in a blue Lund Prov tourney series. Jefferson eyes

have been extremely hard to come by for us. But the ones

we have caught are very fat and healthy. Care to share

any of your techniques?

Nice 'eye Mike.

The weather did not help. I struggled to get on a consistent bite up north as well.

Fishing or working? Not even a question is it?

Hey guys. Yeah, I was out there until about 9 or so sunday evening. Caught the big eye in about 6fow. I would love to fish for bass sometime up there I know there are some big ones in there from all the pictures at beaver dam resort. about 2 years ago we would catch around 40 to 50 northers a time up there but the last couple of years have been slower. don't know what's wrong. but the pike we have caught have been dandy. good luck fishing everyone.

Hey I have a place at beaver dam and the northern fishing has been pretty slow on german and haven't had much luck fishing for walleyes on german, have fished out in front of the island and only caught bullheads does that mean I'm fishing to deep. Would like to catch some eyes any suggestions

Yogi, fish the weeds on German. That's usually where I have the best luck. Also, the area around the big bar(it's all up and down) or east side can be good for running cranks.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
