Went Down the Rum last Sunday from St Francis to County 22. Caught several smallies on jigs and couple on blue cranks. Deer flys were bad in some spots but not to bad overall.

I fished the area by the anoka fairgrounds this a.m., caught 3 smallies in the 16" range. Then ran into battery problems. By the way, the smallies were built like fall bass. FOOTBALLS!

Going to St. Croix this weekend, wanted to try for some Smallies, but also wanted to try for the first time to fish for some catfish. Putting in at Osceola and campimg on and island. Ever been in that area? Any suggestions on what to use for bait, hooks and # test in that area?

FishKiller, can you give me some tips on jigging techniques. How deep do you fish? What type of bait do you tip with? Do you use a verticle presentation?

Was on the Rum last night (7/28) from about 5-9 pm - caught a bunch of dinks and two or three footballs between 15-18". Bite is slow due to large mayfly hatch - very noisy with Fair going on and difficult to park trailer. Surprisngly, no topwater bite - thought with the mayflies that it would be very strong.

Johnnie,

Where I fish on the Rum was using 1/4 oz. jigs crayfish colored with a tip of crawler. and just cast and reel back looking for eddy's that hold fish

What's the water level like on the Rum right now, I was thinking of going northern fishing south of Milaca in two weeks?

From what I can tell the water level is 6" to 1' down. Was out again Saturday morning and caught a couple more jr. pigs (14-17") AND, a WALLEYE!!!!!!!!!! (16.5"). I bit a 4" tube in craw color.....

Is everybody that's posting fishing from a boat?

Anybody fishing from shore in the Anoka area? Any good places from shore around the fairgrounds?

Lost -

I fish it from a boat but I have seen a number of spots along the east side of the river that people work their way down and wet a line. There are also public fishing docks at the Fairgrounds landing and just south of 116 on the west side.

Was out Saturday morning and did pretty well - was surprised that I could not get a topwater bite (we were on the water at 5:00 am) but ended up with 4 fish over 16" with big fish right at 18". Partner had 6 fish with one nearly 17" and a small walleye (10").

I'm starting to get "SMALLIE FEVER" again.....

Daze, I'm aware of the park and Fairgrounds fishing areas. But I've never had any luck finding anything from those spots no matter what I try. It looks like a lot of the east shore is on private property and I don't have waders....

You need to be on the other side of the river for public shore fishing. Try going behind Anoka high school, or near the mental hospital. There is a bike trail that goes all along that part of the river that should get you close to some fish.

Daze - shoot me your avatar & your rum pic and I'll get'em on here for you. My email is below. We should try to hit the Rum again sometime this fall. I'm going with Ebass next thursday (we are both going to be "sick" that day). We'll be looking for some fall time footballs.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
