I am heading to Vermillion this weekend for a little R&R and a lot of fishing (smallie/walleye). I am camping on the east side of the lake. Can anybody offer me any insight on reports and tactics that have been known to produce as of late in that area? I run a little 14ft boat and don't have a depth finder. Will I still be able to find some fish this weekend to catch?

Thanks,

Butch

Try trolling floating raps in the early mornings and late evenings along the shorelines in 6' to 10 ' of water. laugh.gif

The wind is usually down at that time and you can get some really nice eyes too!

Cast green watermelon colored tube jigs along docks and rocky shores for smallies.

My friend dave also said that rubber worms hook ed wacky worm style is also a killer for the smallies. grin.gif

Good Fishing!

Cliff, have you had success on the East side around Jack Rabbit, Cherry, the private unnamed island for trolling cranks? I assume Ely island and the island outside of the the casino bay to be good options for this as well. I have a few spots that I have had very good success for smallies on tubes and Senko's. Have you ever fished any of three bays to the East of the casino. There is a lot of over hanging trees that I think would provide great shade for smallies but have not spent much time there. I have used mostly craw type colored tubes with speckle and done well. You mention the watermellon. I will have to give these a toss. Do you have much success with spinners. I have found white with a double silver blade to work in the past but last weekend this technique did not work.

By the way the bays I asked about to the east of the casino going concerning small mouth certainly hold musky. I was kyaking in that area a monster musky struck my paddle and gave me a couple of shakes. After almost getting capsized and screaming like a girl I was able to gain my composure. I know the spot the hit took place so I am going to toss some musky lures the next time I am up over the 4th

I was out last night and managed alot of fish. Try pulling floating raps (perch) # 9 in 4-6 feet of water running at 3mph on the wind blown shore and look for mayflies and you will catch your fair share and they are all running 16" to 18" long. Last night most of our fish came between 9:00 and 11:00. Good luck and hold on tight!

I have had good luck in the past trolling cranks in the first bay East of Everett Bay.

Have not tried it for smallies in years, but think that they have to be there also!

PS... I think I heard your scream!! grin.gif

Cliff- Thanks for the feedbak. When you say cranks what are some of your go to baits. I troll mostly husky jerks. I personally like the strait silver, the clown, fire tiger, and the blue. What size do you recommend. I generally pull the larger huskies. I also pull the shads in #5-#7. I notice another post that states to pull the floating raps. I do not use many of the floating raps but if they produce I can certainly add a few to the box.

If the scream you heard sounded like a frightened adolecent school girl, then it was me smile.gif

Heading up to crane Lake area. How are conditions and any tips / pointers?

Yes indeed. We actually bought it together. We wedged the pontoon boat into that lift last fall and hoisted it out of the water. Unfortunately the water came up so much this spring, the pontoon couldn't float with the rising levels. There wasn't much that we could do opening weekend except wait for the water to drop and then assess the damage. It's mainly a garbage hauler so no big loss for a $500 boat/motor.

I forgot to post this but I got a jake during season B north of Princeton on some private land.  I had been hunting this flock of birds for 3 seasons now.  I hear and/or see them every day, but simply could not get a legal bearded turkey to come within range.  Finally, a hen came walking out with a jake and I dusted the jake on the 4th day of my hunt.  There's plenty of birds there, including several mature toms, so I intend to keep hunting there in the future as long as I can obtain permission.  The weather was downright terrible.  I had one nice morning of sunshine and then it was windy, rainy, and raw for days.  Saturday morning even produced a heavy summer-type down pour.  I was so thankful to be hunting in a blind.  I also saw a fair amount of other wildlife in four days, including deer, pheasants, a pair of raccoons, and a coyote.

I have questions about the following hypothetical. Buy used boat and trailer from Iowa Resident. Would need to transfer, and I have not done before. Duck boat, may occasionally fish out of it. Technically 15'11 1/2" long. Will have motor. Do I need a title? Does it need registration?   Same for trailer. Need a title? Need Registration? License Plate?   Thank you for any help.

I realize it's only been 2 days Raven77, but are you continuing to see the level decreasing?

Sight fished this one, also got a 19" off a bed with a senko but didn't get a picture because my phone died. Length was 14" for the one in the photo. Haven't been able to get out much recently, but I should be able to go Saturday.
