Bamber lake and Lake George

Recommended Posts

Are these two lakes private lakes and if they are how private. Does this mean if i know someone that lives around them and they ask me to fish i can't just curious as to what you all know. I hear there is some excellent angling in those. let me know what you all know.

Ike -

There are actually 3, and they are all private. The closest one to 52 is Lake George. The next one (surrounded by monstrous homes) has 2 basins and is called Salem Sound. The residents generally patrol them quite heavily, and they will not hesitate to question you. If you are lucky enough to get permission, you will have found the promised land! I have fished all three, (usually during the hard water season), and there are some impressive specimens present. There is actually a 3rd pit a little further west, near the insection of Bamber Valley Rd. It is not developed, but it is also privately owned.

Bamber Lake has very good fishing in it, but it is very private. There is one guy who lives on the lake that is the main "patrol" person. He makes anyone with a pontoon/canoe put a sticker on it so everyone can easily distinguish someone who is not supposed to be there. He has also called the police on people so I would be careful making sure you have permission from someone that lives on the lake.

I have fished it a few times with a friend who lives on that lake. There are lots of fish (sunnies, crappies, largemouth, carp, suckers, walleye, catfish, and a few northerns) with great fishing to be had.

It's also not enough to just have permission to fish Bamber Lake (Salem sound). The person who gives you permission must also be with you or the person who patrols it will have you kicked off. They started this because some of the people who live on it don't fish. They would tell all their friends that they could come and fish it because they didn't care. That led to too many people fishing on that lake.

Not one to start any contraversy, ( maybe a little ) BUT what is a private lake? Who owns it? Is there a title for said water?? and just because you live on the lake, (presumeably with other residents) Just what gives anyone the right to patrol, or control said waters? Please keep in mind i am only speaking of the lake itself, not the property around it. Any way, Great fishin to all wink.gif

( just my little 2 cents to it all )

In the case of these lakes, there is no public access to the water, so the only way to get onto the water is to trespass. The person patrolling it has the right to be there since he owns property on the lake. That also gives him the right to call the Rochester police to report trespassers. Not sure what would actually happen once the police came. I supsect a fine for the 1st or 2nd violation.

It is owned by the neighborhood association - a legal entity of homeowners that live around the lake.

Carl.....The g pilot took that fish from Salem Sound if memory serves me well. And it went back too.

He and I have fished Lake George and it is a phenominal water for super-sized sunfish and crappies. There are lots of line snappers in there. The fish there tend to be full of the black spots and parasitic worms though.

When I was a kid ( you know how old I am so you can imagine how far back I am referring) of about 12, I'd peddle my bike out to what is now Salem Sound and fish all day. I'd cast HulaPoppers and catch everything from bass and crappies to , yes!, sunfish. The two guys that operated the dredge they had in there then would allow me in as long as I left a pail with some fish each trip so they could take them home. I wasn't old enough to understand the what size meant then, but I can remember those sunfish as being absolute pigs compared to those found at Silver Lake. Time has not erased the memories kindled there and I'd be willing to bet that those sunnies were in the 12 inch range quite consistantly

impressive. would be fun to have a private lake like that.

We just bought 18 acres (a week ago we closed) at zumbro falls. it has a pond freshly made on it but doesn't hold water. So i'm thinking that if i put a bit of money into it and make it water tight i might have my own little catch and release pond. Dreams huh? Since we will be closer to wabasha there versus zumbro lake, once we get built and get out there probably will go to backwaters more. we'll see.

Actually William Quick and relatives (Lake George Park LLC) own the vast majority of Lake George and surrounding property, the nearby associations merely have proprietary easements to use the property as they have used the property for many years however proprietary use does not convey ownership. There is one other adjacent landowner aside from the neighborhood associations and L.G.P. LLC and after a field trip to locate the property corner(it's really close to the waters edge) I'll post the other owners title.

Pardon me for using the wrong adjective to describe "use" and "easements" as I've also been researching canoes(as in proprietary lay-up) instead of "proprietary" I should have used "prescriptive" as in "Townhomes of Lakeview" or "Green Meadows Homeowners Corp." may have "prescriptive" use easements to use the property around the lake though they do not actually own the property.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
