How about an annual Minnetonka traveling FM musky trophy?

Recommended Posts

Just a thought. The Mississippi guys have an annual smallie bass magnet award. Think we ought to have a Minnetonka musky something or other. My first inclination is a pink Odyssey Pig or maybe we can get the Barbie doll topwater rigged up. . Rules pretty simple biggest musky by Oct 31. Post your fish length and a pic. If you are fishing alone just take a pic with fish in net. Open to suggestions on rules and award. Right now it looks like Buzzsaw is the leader.

Maybe that last weekend we have a litle FM minnetonka musky get together for some good stories, company, and fishing.

I'm for it. The PMTT tourney is Oct 15/16 so they'll be out the way so Oct 22 or Oct 29 are possible dates. Gray's bay launch should be usable by then. Could even be later as Tonka Boy and I keep fishing until the ice at the launches gets to thick to punch through.

I am marking it on the calender now. It just cannot be on the Gun Deer season opener (Nov. 5th).

This should be lots of fun!!!

Mark, you are very kind for mentioning that lil' fella I accidentily got on opener. I'd be interested! I'm sure plenty of people would.

P.S. I like the mention of PINK from an earlier thread, way to tie that in!

So is it going to be a one day/weekend event, or a "largest muskie by october 31st" thing, or both? I wouldn't mind doing both!

Largest muskie from opener to Oct 31. We could have a get together end of Oct to fish and hand out the award whatever it ends up being.

ok, all we have to do is come up with a "white elephant" type trophy....this could be passed along year to year. Conceptually, the Barbie doll topwater lure takes the cake! If we can only get a working "model" tongue.gif.

like the barbie idea, but i would think that a toy jet ski with some miniature bucktails and suicks stuck in the jet ski drivers back would be humorous. i swear that if i am unfortunate enough to be headed down when i die that my eternal punishment would be having to musky fish every day with lethargic 60" fish swimming around the boat while constantly being buzzed by jet skis.

Since everyone seems to be talking about biggest fish across most of the season, what would be needed for proof? Picture of the fish next to a ruler with some Minnetonka scenery in the background?

Honor system is the rule. Photos would be nice. Just post your fish right here. Believe me you won't want the prize whatever it is but braggin rights could be good. I am leaning to a flaming pink Suick refrig magnet at the moment.

Sounds great. Chances are probably pretty good that you won't have to worry about too much competition from me, I've only fished muskies 3 times in my life (only once on tonka for about 45 minutes) and only caught one the one time I went with a guide up north. And my usual fishing partner is geared almost exclusively for walleye, which sufices when hunting bass, but won't handle the large musky baits. However, after catching my first last week I now know what everyone gets so excited about, I liken it to the fight of a hornry bass with an additional 20 or 30 pounds of muscle. I can't wait to get out there and give it a try.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sounds like a great idea to me. I have some suick blanks that i could do a custom paint job on and it could say "FM muskie Champ 05" on the top or something else is anyone has some ideas. It would be alot of fun to meet up and talk fishing and share some photos and stories.

How about a Pink Weagle, with the "FM Minnetonka Traveling Trophy" slogan. Then on the back, it might say "10 Muskie Guarantee". Or it could say "$100 Redeamable Value"

Hey STANMAN, grin.gif any interest getting out on Tonka and hunting Ski's some night after work?? Next week would probably work best for me as I'm headed up north in a couple of days.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
