I would check into Lax Lake. I have fished it in the spring and did catch some nice bluegills. I believe there is some walleye fishing as well. It might be worth a try. There used to be houses out there in the winter and roads for driving on. Anyone else have any up to date info?

Early Riser is correct. There are walleyes in Lax and it is a better panfish lake, but they do got some nice walleyes. There are 18 shacks on the lake right now but no plowed roads-not much snow. If you want to travel 30 miles toward Isabella or Trestle Inn there are some good walleye lakes in those areas Good luck and maybe I will see you out there.

Trestle is easy to find it is right on Co. rd 7 out of Finland. Lot of the lakes are right next to the road and most all have signs. Last weekend you could drive to any lake with 4 wheel drive. The county tries to keep most accesses open. Nine mile, Crooked and Dam Five are just a few right on Co. rd 7. There are also a few trout lakes next to the road. Over toward Isabella I would try Delay or Dumbell for walleye or Divide for trout. If you have a snomobile and we got enough snow there are some nice lakes right here in the park, but you can't drive on them or use a power auger. Holiday station in Beaver Bay has some bait and there is a sport shop that rents snowmobiles and you can get live minnows and bait in Finland.
good luck!

Have caught walleyes off the airplane dock in the evening in the summer but I have never fished it in the winter a local told me sat. that it is not a great winter fishery. I can't understand why when it is so good in the summer. I fished a lake 10 miles east of there regular with the same results and will be trying it monday, tuesday, wednesday. I was by Dumbell saturday and there wasn't a person on the lake. There wasn't a plowed access like a lot of the other lakes in the area, a lot of the plowing is done by locals. I drove through the access and had no problem.
I have lived here for a while but didn't grow up here, might be older than the town.
Trails are closed to ATV travel december 1st and thats too bad because we need snow.
Saturday there were 5 pickups and 3 to 4 dozen shacks on lax lake a couple off the island on ninemile and several people fishing echo.
When I get back wednesday or thursday I'll let you know how I did.
Be sure and have a camera you might see wolf or moose.

Don't know much about crooked, I wouldn't give upon Dumbell yet there are some good looking structure. Bring an ATV if you have one its been warm the past week and we have some melting snow I used a snomobile up til wednesday though with no problems and walleye fishing was slow and small northern were a little more active but small.
You can drive a ATV a lot of places but not where there are groomed snomobile trails even if they aren't grooming. In the summer they open up some of these trails to ATV travel. Be sure to get a lake map. Any more ?'s post and I'll try to get back.
Good luck... the north woods are very pretty this time of year and please carry out your trash, because other people aren't

roli94, I got off msn/webtv and I couldn't see my posting or yours so I got on our computer and they showed up right away so I reregistered as ludy1.
Birch you'll do a lot of driving on back roads. You can access it from highway 1, big lake, i've heard nice reports. Its so big, you might need a guide. I think give Dumbell a try. For you and your girlfriend, it could be romantic, that's how I got my wife up here. Its so nice, fish are just a +. From Dumbell you are just a short ways from resturuants. When you go through Finland Our Place is great for breakfast. Plus there's a resturaunt in Silver Bay that serves gerat food.
When you get up here I hope nobody sees this #, 226-3286. If I'm home or not on this website call me.

There is going to be two couples going sure think we would be able to find some good structure with a map and electronics. We might try birch or else dumbbell. If I tell my buddy that you've heard good reports he'll probably want to go there! Anyways it will still be fun at least we'll be fishing! Is that where you live is Finland my girlfriends aunt and uncle live close to there Dave and Penny Rodgers we are from the willmar area . Well I'd better go nice chatin with ya

Nice walleyes, were you fishing off the island? Everybody likes the trestle, a very unique spot in the northwoods. Don't wait that long to come up. Last of September-leafs and good fishing-no bugs. Have you ever seen a wolf (kewl) seen lots, & to bad you didn't see moose-a moosey area. That is what fishing is to me (some fish scenery an wildlife) loons.
Come back and enjoy.

I came up when it was hot (mid 80's) and unfortunately it has stayed that way the whole trip.  I knew I was doomed when Pike Bay was over 82 degrees, and Big Bay was well in the mid 70's.  Skies have been blue, and with little wind to break up the water.  I got up around 5 am, and stayed on the lake until 10 or so.  I didn't want to get sick, this is supposed to be fun afterall, and I came back on after 4 pm.  I trolled trying to find them.  I was successful, but only got enough to get some fish fry's for the family.  The bigger ones came from lead core, with an occasional one coming in from trolling shallow.  DNR stopped by while on the lake, and he said the mayfly hatch might be starting.  Good luck everybody!

Question for this knowledgeable group   I've noticed over the past two weeks at the lake that in certain areas there seems to be a ton of black "duck-like" floaters that seem to congregate by tons and stir up the water and then move to another area close by, stir up the water again and move again. I've seen them recently in Greenwood Bay and around Fectos.   Are these cormorants? Are they stirring up the water by fishing?   Thanks

Followed the advice I posted, slip bobbers w rainbows and crawlers in big bay on a dozen humps topping out at 6 to 12'. Caught a few smalles and a couple 12" walleyes. So not very successful but maybe didn't hit the right humps or lake was too calm or wrong time of day - 7:30 11 am. That's why they call it fishin'

I may have to take you up on that. I've been moving for a month and don't even have my boat in the lake yet!

Walleye Report:  Just spent a week on the lake (East end).  The fishing was as hot as the weather with many, many 14-25" walleyes.   Surface Temps: Consistently 70-72 with the recent hot weather.  Swimming was comfortable the past three days.  Depths:  All caught in less than 10 FOW Techniques: Lures - Plastics and jerkbaits.  We bought two dozen leeches but never opened them.  I do regret not watching a bobber dip below the surface.   Tactics: Cast and retrieve lures in sandy bays, over main lake/secondary rocky points, across rocky flats, between sandy flats, and throughout silt/mud bays with shallow weeds.  A little wind and clouds helped but was not always necessary.  And we had lots of random fish.    Advice:  Get out there and fish.  These patterns should hold for the next week-two.  The fish are aggressively feeding in the shallows where they are finding crawfish, shiners, etc.  A fast moving bait is getting hammered.  I literally can't tell you how many times I saw fish INHALE our presentations at the boat.   The population is healthy.  Catch and keep a few and let a bunch of them go.     Good luck.

Lol, if they had enough enforcement in the first place. They may catch them the rest of the season without the tag!
