Hey Lundman, did you go to Upper Red New Year's Day? How'd it go? I stayed close to home, fishing one of the many Superior-side inlets to St. Louis Bay. First time there for me. Kept 12 perch from 9 to 12 inches (turned back another 8 to 10 that were smaller), 5 crappies from 10 to 14 inches and one 8.5 inch sunny. Equal success with small jigging Raps and small Swedish pimples, both tippped with minnow head -- and glow jigs tipped with live minnow back-hooked under slip bobber. Fun day. No walleyes or pike on the tip-up, though. Plus, somebody should have had a video cam for my steep slide downhill to the ice with the Fish Trap (what fine sledding). I'm getting too old for this crap. Didn't know there was an easier trail nearby. Live (luckily) and learn.

stfcatfish,

Hi, sorry I didn't see your post sooner. Been pretty busy lately. Anyway, didn't go to Red. Decided to try Vermillion, just for something different. Well, the luck wasn't so good. Not many fish caught by any of the locals either, we talked to about a dozen.

oops, clicked when I should have clacked. Anyway, we had a good day, and I got to put some miles on the sled. I did try the river this past weekend. Me and the 5 year old went out for about 3 hours, 2 of which were spent fishin', and we ended up with half a dozen pretty good crappies, one about 14, and two good perch that we ate that night. I'll be gone this weekend, up to Grand Marais splake fishing, but the following week I'll be heading out somewhere on the River. I'll keep in touch, maybe we can hook up, if you don't mind a almost 6 year old with.

Set the Hook!!

Lundman

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
