Birdog...

I think your setting your goals a little high for a 30 pounder. What if you see a #20 come through the hole and think it is a #30 and stick it? Will you be disappointed in yourself?

Why don't you sneak into Frazier or twin cities pits right next to you and stick a big pike, I have seen and caught huge pike in those pits fishing for trout. Remember the big pike that was speared in the West side of Chisholm lakes last year, you could spear there!

Over the last few years I have lost my will to take those huge pike. First off, I have no use for them, I love to smoke pike and pickle them as long as they are under 7 lbs.
I have done my damage to small lakes as far as removing the largest pike in the system.

Spearing doesn't effect the larger systems like Kap, or Burntside as much as it does lakes under a Thousand acres, yet it still takes its toll. I must be getting old, I have no desire to hunch over a hole for hours anymore, I remember how my back felt after a couple of days out spearing.

Do you fish for anything besides Pike? I was in Chisholm this Fall after my field season up here and had the rod with me so I stopped by the fishing pier at Chisholm lakes. It was raining like hell and in an hour I pulled a limit of Walleye's, pretty surprised! I used to fish it in High School and catch them. I had a guy come down thinking I was someone else because I had my mitsubishi with me. Another guy from Chisholm has the same one. He could not believe I had a limit of nice Eye's from there.

Well! Good luck spearing this ice-season, hope you get a #30. Burntside would definitely be my first choice for a monster.

I fish for crappies ,Lakers & Splake through the ice, Hold the State Record Splake as of last Feb.They say it's the 4th largest in the world, & biggest ever taken through the Ice. according to the Mn.D.N.R. and National fishing Hall of Fame. They have me in their record books. Thank You again for your advice!

Mike....Congrats on your record Splake!

I grew up only 30 minutes from Larson and have fished it for years. I used to enjoy catching nice Rainbows out of there before they started manageing it for Splake. Caught some beautiful fish out there in the last couple of years. I too spear Larson and now know where your big fish have come from.

I was on Tofte the day you and Greg Luoma caught your big Splake. I was impressed when I seen Gregs Splake. The same day I landed an 8-1/2. Must have been one hell of a day for Splake fishing to have two state records caught in one day.

I was sampling in the spring of 2000 with the MNDNR on Larson and we Electro-shocked a 13.879 a new state record. We pulled a few scales, measured it and released it. If that fish has not died of natural mortality(or unnatural mortality) it is the new state record fish just waiting to be caught.

Good Luck with your record, hopefully you can hold onto it for another year. The way the state is manageing Splake in Northern MN, Your record most likely will not hold up for long. Hope it does though. Good Luck!

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.

Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.

Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!

I hope to see it and believe it next week! Nice looking crappie

Been out couple times this last week. Between the rain and wind there really was only one day this past week where it was actually warm out fishing.  Water temps are low mid 50s yet, not much change from last week.  Fish are still holding out off the first break on some area lakes and right up in the boat channels and back bays of others.   Been keeping it pretty simple as far as tackle used. Having the best luck with the lil hustler tubes under a small float or throwing the Bobby Garland baby shads with a 1/32 jig head.  The Bobby's have definitely been my big fish catcher this spring.
