Looking for a part for evinrude outboard

bdiddy

Question

Im looking for a power head for a 1971 18 H.P. Evinrude. Got the motor back from some (Contact US Regarding This Word) who didn't winterize it after it was lent to him. It was my grandfathers and an family hearloom. Other than the cylinders being pitted now from the pistons freezing in them, this motor is nice! Any help on how much this would run me would be appreciated also. Thanks. /b

If you opened motor and saw cylinders being pitted you are 1/2 way to a rebuild. Just hone cylinders very well and get new oversized rings, you should be good to go. No need to spend a fortune over an old powerhead.

Check with a mechanic, to be 100% sure.

Otherwise good ole Ebay can come handy if there's a 18hp listed....

Thanks Valv--say, I talked to a guy at an outboard repair/scrapyard a couple days ago--told me you cant get over-sized pistons. And for honing the cylinders--know any body I could contact?

Call Twin City Outboard. They are in Savage right next to the old Canterbury Downs. Don't have the #, but you can do a Google search for it. Or call Don's outboard motors by Brooklyn Park @ 763-533-6253. He'd probably do it for around $500.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
