Lightning Lake Report

Fished Lightning Lake last nite. Caught zero fish. 3 guys tried using minnows, leechs, and crawlers. Other boats reported similar luck. It was a nice night to be on the water though.

Isin't that a pretty shallow weedey lake in the summer?

Yes, it gets overgrown with weeds in the summer. However, the last 2 years fishing in May has been pretty decent for walleyes. I don't think the lake gets over 10 ft deep. If you are there on the right day before the weeds take over, it can be pretty good fishing. It is a close lake for me, so I try and hit it a couple times each year in the end of May.

If you are fishing Lightning at night I bet Purple Rebel Fastracks and #13 Gold with a black back Rapala work as well now as 10-15 years ago when we fished it at night. Run the shoreline with your electric and pound the bank like you are bass fishing. Especially the chunk concrete around the Mustinka outlet if the water is flowing over the culvert. Let us know if it still works. Remember the main forage is small bullheads hence the color choices. Not perfect but close. I always meant to paint a couple cranks black with a little yellow on the belly but we always caught fish so I did not bother. Joe Z.

I have been on Lightning now three times this spring, still no fish but have been hearing a few mixed reports. Usually the bite is on and lasts a week or so if even that so hitting it on the right day makes all the difference. I have had the best luck in recent years using a orange jighead with a yellow body twister tail without tipping with any bait. Just my two cents worth

I have never fished this lake. Is it the one where they have a camp ground and a grass softball field? Near Wendell?
