  • 2 weeks later...

Hey Mike,

When is your early trip this year? Jeanne and I will be up late on the 11th and stay thru the 19th of June. Maybe we'll see you.

FiveBucks,

If all goes as planned Chris and I will be there the 11th through the 17th. We were hoping you and Jeanne would be there at that time.

This year we are overnighting in Bemidji on the 10th due to the Fireman's convention and lack of accomodations in Grand Rapids. That will make for a longer drive, 660 miles, on Friday. I expect we'll be pretty tired by the time we arrive.

I need to find a new place to pick up leeches and crawlers. I've heard good things about Taber's in Bemidji and will probably give them a try.

I wonder how Tyho's been doing this week? Hope he left a few for us.

See you soon,

Indiana Mike

well we had alot of rain. The fishing was tough on Island. We did catch a few to eat. But most were in the slot and were put back. Our other favorite lakes were not hitting very well either. We did how ever have a good time at October Ridge, this was the first year for the family and they all had a good time. But the fishing was down for us this year. I hope Mike does better than we did.

Well our week on Island lake began on Saturday 6/11 with partly cloudy skies and pleasant temperatures. However the rains returned in the afternoon and didn't end until Wednesday morning. The fishing was tough all week. When we did get out between the showers we found the fish to be few and far between. We did catch (and release) numerous Smallmouth Bass, the largest weighing about three pounds. We caught our limit of Northern Pike up to 24" and released my personal best on Island Lake at 31". We looked long and hard for the Perch but only brought in about 15 keepers for the two of us. There are zillions of 3" perch out there stealing what ever live bait we used.

After the rains finally quit the weather turned bluebird clear with calm to variable winds and temps in the mid to upper 70's. The bottom was easily visibly down to about 10'. Aside from the Northern and Smallmouth it was nearly impossible the catch anything outside the early morning or late evening hours. We did our best after 8:30 each evening.

Many thanks to Fivebucks for putting me on a few walleye. We did bring home three good eaters just short of 17". They accounted for more than half the walleye caught at the resort the entire week. Chris and I both enjoyed our short visit with Mark, Jeanne and Jack at their beautiful cabin in the woods.

Tyho, activities on Saturday prevented getting together as I had hoped and by the time we were settled in it was too late in the evening. It sounds like your week was much the same as ours. I'm glad October Ridge worked out for you. Hope we can try agin another time.

While I wouldn't exactly call Island Lake the Dead Sea I do believe the lake is in an extended period of transition. Northern Pike seem to have increased in population and size. Smallmouth Bass have really established a growing population. The Perch are regenerating after a huge spawn in 2004. It remains to be seen as to what the new slot on Walleye will produce. I'll be back at the end of August for another try.

We had the exact weather that Mike had, of course we were up the same week. The fishing was on the tough side. The first few days only the northerns were being caught by me. About mid-week I was able to zero in on the 17-20' depth and would pick up some eyes. I wouldn't get much in numbers, maybe 1-3 fish per day but they were some nice fish between 16-20" (good thing there were a few at 16" so we could eat some with a new 17-26" protected slot). The routine was to keep trying different spots until finding some active fish, most mornings I would hit 4-5 spots. Leeches worked the best for me.

Mike, it was good to see you and Chris. Thanks for stopping by for a visit. We'll let you know if we'll be up there during your August trip.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
