Paul Follmer,

I don't know the regulations in and out but aren't there catch and release tournaments?

I haven't fished in a tournament for a few years, but when I did we released the big fish back into the lake.

Just asking.

Paul- If you put a fish on a stringer its going to die anyways why would you want to release it. If you put a fish in the livewell, in the summer, for a couple hours it will probly die anyways thats why they made the no cull rule. Its preaty simple, if you dont want to keep a fish dont put it in your livewell, not real hard. I cant go to the TOurney after all, im going to a lake near hackensack till friday then going to some partys over the weekend so I cant make it.

Please count me in if there is still a spot available. My wife and I would love to get in. I figure if the fishing is slow, the wife can nag the rest of the field into a coma and give me a chance!! LOL

I'm just wondering what the parking is like at Cove access? I've never put a boat in there and I'm wondering if I should come by water or land there?

The rule says that once you are in possession of a limit of fish, you cannot sort them.

So for Mille Lacs (4 fish limit)....

if you have three in the live well and want to cull fish, you are legal. Once the fourth fish goes into the livewell, you can no longer cull fish.

Hope that helps.

Also for the tournaments I have seen, a team of two anglers usually can weigh in one persons limit of fish. Therefore, because there is only one limit in the livewell and the team would need two limits to fall under the no cull rule.....culling is still legal unless the team has both limits in the live well.

Does everyone read the rule the same way I do here????

waste,

Did you see anywhere in the regs. where you can't return fish after weigh in? That's not really culling if you're just returning fish to the lake, is it?

I just went on the DNR web page and looked up tournaments/contests and I found a state statute 6212.2600 talks about releasing healthy fish immediately following weigh-in. It appears to be talking about the tournaments that require permits and there is a permit for those tournaments that allows for holding of healthy fish and then returning them to the lake right after weigh-in.

How many boats are in so far? The weather looks like it can be on the rainy side on sat, this will not be cancelled will it?

Sorry if I stirred the pot it was not my intention, I brought it because I read it someone talked about releaseing fish on a stringer. I just fished the RCL league there and our fish were giving back to us to do as we wanted. RCL could not release the fish back to the water, and somebody mentioned at the rules meeting that once a fish hit the well or stringer it must be kept and not released. just my .2 cents worth

Due to some problems the only way I can fish is if someone invites me into their boat. So if you'd like to fish and have an open seat give me a call. 612-414-7952 My name is Tim. After about an hour here, I won't have computer access so that number is the only way I can be reached. Thanks

I'll be on the lake tonight through Sunday. I would love to fish with you guys but I have a boat situation.

I'm in rain or shine as long as we have enough teams to make things interesting. So come on guys and gals, this is a great opportunity to meet some fellow F.M.er's and have some fun. Tournaments are a blast and a $20 entry fee you can't go wrong.

I would also like to know how many boats we have. Rain or shine I will show, but I would like to see ten teams otherwise we might as well fish just for fun. Cove is a long way from my favorite fishing grounds.

eye's,

We are suppose to start at 7:00, so I'm guessing we should be there early enough to get boats in the water and trucks parked. It is at the Cove access. See everyone there.

We had 100's of Walleye before noon. It was great. Many over 28" too.

Then I woke up.

1 fish out of all of us, I caught alot of perch nothing else. Drove back to Bemidji, had my limit in 1 hour.

Dang, Sounds like I should have fished this thing solo. I ended up going to Mille in the morning but didn't have a buddy that could make it. Mayfly, I see that you were looking. I caught one Walleye in 2.5 hours of fishing Saturday morning, but it hit the tape at 29.75 inches.

Well to all of you that didn't make it to the FM get together on Mille Lacs you didn't miss much as far as fishing goes!!!

It was however really nice to put some faces to the names. Sud's and I fished the hump, sloppy joe's, deep break in front of cove bay and a couple of other spots, nothing but perch!!!

We wanted to run over to our "secret spot", but with the fog sooooo thick in the morning we did'nt feel like running way across the lake and by the time the fog lifted it was getting a little rough to head over to it.

I want to thank Nav and Crossin, eyes for putting things together, I hope we can do it again next year, maybe a little earlier in June.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
