Just a heads up for everyone that has sucker fishing on the brain (like myself). It's high and it's chocolate milk / butterscotch pudding down by Z.F and Hammond. Just a bit early.

Well, with this being the case what would you guy's recommend for some open water shore fishing early next week? I would rather find a nice place to sit and soak a worm than go wading for trout. I know I am going to have to get out there some where. It will be my first time out this year.

Dan, what does the river look like between Zumbro Falls and Hammond? With this 70 degree weather, I don't care if I get skunked, I jsut have to get out there!! Thanks.

Still dirty and a little high. Might be worth a quick trip just to "scratch the itch". With rain in the forcast it might still be a while before it clears up. Mazeppa Creek has started to clear up some. Zumbro won't be long.

Let me know if you go and I'll try and get down there too.

how do you typically fish for suckers? I have just used a worm ball on a hook in the past.

Hey Carl,

Really, it's the most easy way of fishing there is. Like you say just a crawler of half a crawler on a baitholder or circle hook. Then cast out into a a hole that has some current or current close to it then put the rod in a "Y" sitck. Or better yet two "Y" sticks. One in front of the other. The back one being a little shorter. and wait for the tap tap on the pole. I generally like to take it right away. Setting the hook at the first sign of a bite.

Carl, give me your e-mail and I'll let you know when I go sometime. If you have kids bring them along. It's always fun sucker fishing, and roasting weiners on a stick.

remove the *nospam* and spaces to email me (i post it this way to prevent automated harvesting of my email address by spammers).

That would be fun. My kids like to go fishing. We like to do the sucker/carp fishing earlier in the year then transition to the gills/crappies, then to bass. :-)

Well, I made it out and fished from 5:30 until almost 9 tonight. I managed one 4 pound (or so) white sucker (I think) and a drum (sheep head). I tryed 2 different spots along the canoe route. I had many "hits" that ended up just being snags. Man that makes me mad. How does a snag go tap, tap, tap on your rod just like a fish?

Oh, Dan I think that rock spot you mentioned is closed off. I went to where I think it is, some one has barbed wire right across the trail to the water and no trespassing signs are posted everywhere this year. I might go out again on Thursday night if you are interested?

Got down to the first wingdam up from Hammond tonight. Fished for about a half an hour after supper. Got 1 carp (only about 18" long) and one white about the same size. The water is still about a foot to two feet high and still dirty. Had a couple other bites but missed em. Still nice to be out. laugh.gif

Tonights trip down by Hammond was quite an event!

My two youngest kids and I met up with fellow FMer Murphfisher and his sidekick Bailey. He put on a school catching three to my one. I was definatley hearing the school bells ringing. So I decided to try another spot before dark30. It turned out to be a nice place for a big carp. Alex, our youngest fought a good battle with a dandy! He had his drag set perfect so he decided to not try and horse it and play it long enough so that he could land it. Well I should have got over to help him sooner because that big 'ol carp decided to wrap Al's line around some debris and get stuck. Now his line was tied to something under water and he was trying to get it unhooked with a branch. All that did was break his line. Man is he ever pumped up to go back. This time he says he's bringing some corn and a bigger pole.

That kid cracks me up!! grin.gif

We had a great time doing the "roughfish" thing. I don't care what any one says, I think it is a blast. Planing to go back all weekend too.... Here are a couple shots of Bailey watching for hits smile.gif

Just wanted to let you guys know that I fished last weekend down by Kellogg, I had some luck, caught a couple, lost a couple. Lots of debris and the river was moving really fast. The only way I could catch them was with a 3/4 ounce weight on a 7wo foot lead connected to a three way swivel, the business end was another 2 foot lead with a split shot sinker about a foot away. I tried other rigs but caught nothing, all the fist I caught were on this type of rig. I can't make it out this weekend, major bummer. I think that it will really be good this weekend.

Trigger, you won't be missing too much. The water is still a bit dirty. It's starting to get better and it won't be too much longer and the rough fish bite is going to explode!

Have you ever fished the Zumbro down by Kruger Campground? That part of the river you need a big weight. I always like to use a sliding sinker instead of three ways. Everybody has thier own method though.

Going out after some more bugle nose trout with Murph tonight if anyone wants to join us we'll be on the River Road. Green Chevy P.U. and a red Blazer.

Maybe post some pictures later on how we did!

We got down to the river again today after work. The water is still relativley clean and at a decent level.

We caught seven species of fish in three hours. Just sucker fishing with a crawler on the bottom. We got a lot of suckers, all three kinds, reds, whites, and blacks. But along with those we caught sheepshead, bass,(by accident) a brown trout 19", (also by accident), a crappie, a bullhead, and a striper. All were released.

Biggest fish tonight was a 22" long white.

It was definatley a great evening to be out.

(MURPHFISHER, all those fish came out of the same spot you and I have been going.) grin.gif

Dan & Murph I would like to meet and go fishing with you guy's some time, if you do not mind. I have been wanting to fish the Zumbro for some time now. But just do not know where to start. It would have to be on a weekday evening because I work weekends frown.gif.

If either of you would like to let me know. smile.gif

Thanks,

Lights

No problem Lights. I'd be glad to put you on a sucker bite.

I went today with Hanson, a pro staff FMer. We didn't do too bad considering the cold and wind. We ended up with 7 suckers biggest was only 20". Two sheepies, one being very large.

If you want to come down next week maybe say Tuesday or Thursday night, let me know. Just send me an e-mail, kellythiem*at*aol.com.

Today I bet I saw over fifty suckers running through the rapids. They may have been spawning by the way they keep splashing in the shallow riffles.

Lights-

Dan can show you the ropes, thats for sure.

Bring lots of hooks and split shot with. I am now the king of snags and can retie a sucker rig pretty quickly. grin.gif Hope you made it out fishing today Dan, the weather sure turned for the better- warmer & less wind.

Hi Chris,

Yep I went again today. I took a freind and his two boys. We went to the first wingdam that you and I went to and just hammered them.

It started getting really busy around 4:30. We pulled in 2 whites that were 22+ inches and a number of others that were smaller. One nice red also.

I'm still trying to beat my 23"er this year but can't quite but that mark.

The Neptune Bar is having a contest. It only runs for a week, and the only stipulation is the sucker has to be caught out of the Zumbro.

Tuesday or Thursday after work would work well for me too. I need to get out there again after hearing of Dan's 7 species evening. We have a great spot that can probably support up to 10 people (at least). Let me know when you plan to go.

Murph,

I found the spot with the barbed wire. The sign said, No Tresspasing and removing the sign will not stop you from being prosicuted. WOW!!

It's just a so-so spot anyways. I wonder why it's so posted. Maybe the landowner was tired of all the litter.

Lets go and get some bugle lips. What do you think? Tues. or Thurs.?

How about both wink.gif The weather is looking very similar for either of those days. I got the go ahead from the wife to come home smelling of roughfish and nectar of the gods either night. LOL!

Lights,

Can you meet me in Zumbro Falls @ 5:15 p.m.? If you come south on 52 watch for the HWY60 going east sign. It's right after Zumbrota. Take 60 going east. You will come to a town called Mazeppa that's 6 miles from 52. Go the speed limit through town. Wabasha county can get pretty strict. Keep going east on 60 and Zumbro Falls is another 6 miles. If you want to meet me at the BP station that could work out.

If you want to come sooner maybe Murphfisher could meet up with you. I have to work untill 4:30.

Andy, you sure can meet up with us too. Just go down the river road and look for my truck or Murph's red Blazer.

Lights, as far as tackle and bait just bring some #6 baitholders #8's work too but I like a bigger hook. Also some pea size split shot with some 6-8 pond test line and you will be set. Crawlers are sold at the BP also. Unless you already have some.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
