Hardly believe in two weeks I'll be heading up to the pond for the opener. I can't wait! Where are people dropping their boats? I think I'll be headed up to the sand and work the Malmo area. Anybody else?

I'll be up Friday morning. I'll be staying in Macs Twin Bay, depending on the conditions and wind I plan to fish the east and south side of the lake. I imagine i'll be drinking a few beers at "Smokin Hills".

Does anyone have marine radios? And if so what channel will you all be on???

I'll be fishing a smaller lake at midnight Friday, but we'll be heading to Mille Lacs for a little Saturday fishing. Not looking forward to the zoo at the boat landing. Will try either the Garrison area or Malmo. Hope fishing is good!

Tour Pro,
I'll be in the SW corner also, a buddy of mine has a trailer at Edgewter, if the wind blows too hard in the south I may trailer up and head to the sand near Malmo. Otherwise, give me a holler on 69 and let me know how you're doing, I'll do the same.

I don't know about you guys but it will be tough to sleep tonight with visions of walleyes dancing in our heads. Can't wait to hit the big pond early Saturday. Sounds like plenty of warm clothes and the coffee jug are in play for the weekend. Good luck to all and remember every good fisherman's three favorite words.............GET THE NET!!!

P.S Any body else going to stay up a bit longer because Mothers Day is over.

Ole,

Sorry no radio, but if you see a blonde guy in guidewear running from the front of a Tour. Pro 175 with a 150 Merc and a 9.9 Merc kicker swing over and say hi.

Good luck,
Paul

How far is it by boat from the casino landing to the malmo area? I like the landing by the casino, but it would probably make more sense to land at malmo.

I just don't like trying new landings on opener morning.

Any advice would be great.

Tour,
Sounds good I have a ProV 1890 175EFI Merc. it's a brown/gold signature series, I'll be bundled up in lots of clothes by the look's of the weather. 3 guy's in my boat, I'll be running with 2 guy's in a 2090 Warrior tiller, 125 Merc. we'll be working the break in front of Eddy's all the way around to the casino. I hope to keep a little space between us and everyone else, but you know Mille Lacs on opener!!! Don't get the landing net too high where anyone can see it, you'll get tons of visitors!!!

Have fun, be safe!

Ole#1,

That's a pretty long cruise from the landing by the casino to Malmo, basically from one end of the lake to the other. the landing at malmo is good but shallow, from what everyones been saying the lake is down, that might make it fun at Malmo access since it's kinda shallow there when the lake is at normal levels.

I just bought a 2004 Crestliner Superhawk, Johnson 115. (Gray and White) Picking it up tomorrow morning at 10:00am. Nothing like making a virgin voyage on Mille Lacs.

Beef,
Just make sure the plug is in before you "drop it" in the water.

Nice boat beef, is that a four stroke?

Crestliner makes a great boat, you'll love it.

Hey Beef eater!
You do know that fishing out of a new boat on the opener is bad luck!! You may not catch anything or even get a bite. That is two bad with a nice boat like that. Are you going to be by yourself? How are you going to fish....it may not matter.

That is a nice boat!!

Ole #1. Nah, it's a 2 stroke. With everything else I got on it I couldn't afford to pay the extra $2500 for the 4-stroke. It'll do though. Just be a little louder and worse on gas.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
