Hey Nav, if we do a tourney, how many boats can we have before we need to get a permit from the DNR? Do you know?

I've never fished a tourny before, but would like to, formal or informal.

I'm open to anything, it should be fun.

This is what I found on the DNR site:

Permit Requirements
A permit will be required for any fishing contest that is limited to specifically named waters if one or more of the following apply:

There are greater than 30 participants for open-water contests or 150 participants for ice-fishing contests;
The entry fee is greater than $25 per person;
The total prize value is greater than $25,000; or
The contest is limited to trout species only.

Contests limited to youth age 18 and under will not need a permit. Fishing contests that are not limited to specifically named waters, that is, are statewide, will not need a permit, unless they are limited to trout species only.

If entry fees are over $25 per person, or total prizes are valued at more than $25,000, and if the applicant has either not previously conducted a fishing contest requiring a permit, or ever failed to make required prize awards in a fishing contest conducted by the applicant, the applicant may be required to furnish evidence of financial responsibility in the form of a surety bond or bank letter of credit in the amount of $25,000.-

Permits are issued without a fee to Minnesota residents only

The site is:

Just my thoughts, show up at access "x" and put your $20 into a hat, record the names at that time, top 4 places pay-out based on number of boats such as:
1st 50% of purse
2nd 25% of purse
3rd 15% of purse
4th 10% of purse

Something like that?? Other ideas. Nav

Oh yeah, optional 5$ per boat for big fish?

I think that is a really great idea.
I love fishing that lake and would be all for a tournament on it. So it would just be an informal thing? if that is waht you are thinking I really think it would work and would be a whole bunch of fun.

Plus I am a big fan of your last name....because it is mine too. It is good to see that there are other Navratils out there as passionate about the sport as I am. So keep doin what you do best, and maybe we will see you on the water.

keep fishin'

We probably need to pick a date so we can get a rough idea on a head count. Any ideas on a date? Nav

Make it a Saturday........Launch out of Macs Twin Bay or Somewhere in the SE area?

May or June Preferably

This Sounds Fun

Sounds good to me. I think we should make a series of 3 or more tourneys on the lake. Maybe a May, June, July, August, Septempber deal. That way people have a few different dates to try to work into the schedule and maybe the person with the highest point at the end of the season can be named the "Mille Lacs Super Star" or whatever, jk on that! I would be in favor of having at least some of the tourney date/s early in the year or late like September. The bite is best then and the MN DNR has a catch and kill tourney rule when the water temp warms(I think it is around 68 degrees) That way we can weigh a few of the 28+ fish and watch them swim away. Can't see any reason to keep a health 6-7 pound walleye. I am all for the informal idea. More like a FM gathering like somebody else said meet at "x" put a 20 in and go have fun fishing.

I'm not very experienced on this lake and this will be the first summer I try to spend a lot of time on this water. Second disadvantage is I've never been in a fishing tournament. Even with those limitations, depending on the date, I'd probably participate.

If there are going to be a couple of FM tourneys as some have suggested or even one a month kind of thing, could I suggest perhaps making one of them a Father - Son/Daughter format ?

How does Saturday May 22nd work for everyone?
What end of the lake do people want to meet at and launch from?

May 22nd sounds great...I would rather stay south/east.....For one, The boat I use is kept down there and there is a lot of structure in that area.

Just my 2 cents.........

I say we have it in July when we have a smaller slot. More of a chance for everyone.
I'm game, but can't in May.

I cant do it the 22nd, thats the weekend Im fishing salmon in Lake superior. I wouldent mind doing it in june, I think we should have the tournament out of the sha-bosh-Kung public access. Nice access and its right in the middle of the lake, if you want you could run up to the north or south end or just fish the west side which is just as good.

sounds good! we should fish the north side in the sand. It will be cool to see what kind of big ones we pull out of there.

Right now I can make it so I'm with Mike on the May 22nd date and fishing out of either the Wealthwood or Malmo public accesses (7AM to 4PM). Sound good? I can help with collecting $ and weigh-in, but I will be fishing too.

If we want to schedule a 2nd tourny and to help the guys that can't make it in May, maybe we could shoot out a another date??

I will be fishing another tournament on that date. I know it's hard to find a date that fits everyones schedule. Would May 29th or June 5th be possible?

I like the time slot Jon suggested.

As far as a launching site I was wondering if the Garrison or Sha-Bosh-Kung access could be used? Both are large, plenty of room for a weigh in and more centralized for those that like to fish the South side.

I would be more than happy to help out anyway I can.

Paul....I know what you mean, the Garrison access is nice and a far cry better than the two I mentioned and it would be closer to the south end so let's change to that spot.

On the date, if majority rules on another date, that works for me. I am guiding on May 28th, 29th & 30th.

With this in mind, who can do it on the 22nd? Or what other dates? Nav

If you are going to use a public access it should probably be Sha-bosh or Cove as they are the only 2 protected accesses and Sha-bosh is the better of the 2. Garrison is nice sized, but I would hate to see a guy with a big new 620 rig try to launch his boat with a strong SE wind, Yikes! There is no shortage of rocks out front there either. Unfortunatly a nice rig is not a problem I have to deal with.

I came up when it was hot (mid 80's) and unfortunately it has stayed that way the whole trip.  I knew I was doomed when Pike Bay was over 82 degrees, and Big Bay was well in the mid 70's.  Skies have been blue, and with little wind to break up the water.  I got up around 5 am, and stayed on the lake until 10 or so.  I didn't want to get sick, this is supposed to be fun afterall, and I came back on after 4 pm.  I trolled trying to find them.  I was successful, but only got enough to get some fish fry's for the family.  The bigger ones came from lead core, with an occasional one coming in from trolling shallow.  DNR stopped by while on the lake, and he said the mayfly hatch might be starting.  Good luck everybody!

Question for this knowledgeable group   I've noticed over the past two weeks at the lake that in certain areas there seems to be a ton of black "duck-like" floaters that seem to congregate by tons and stir up the water and then move to another area close by, stir up the water again and move again. I've seen them recently in Greenwood Bay and around Fectos.   Are these cormorants? Are they stirring up the water by fishing?   Thanks

Followed the advice I posted, slip bobbers w rainbows and crawlers in big bay on a dozen humps topping out at 6 to 12'. Caught a few smalles and a couple 12" walleyes. So not very successful but maybe didn't hit the right humps or lake was too calm or wrong time of day - 7:30 11 am. That's why they call it fishin'

I may have to take you up on that. I've been moving for a month and don't even have my boat in the lake yet!

Walleye Report:  Just spent a week on the lake (East end).  The fishing was as hot as the weather with many, many 14-25" walleyes.   Surface Temps: Consistently 70-72 with the recent hot weather.  Swimming was comfortable the past three days.  Depths:  All caught in less than 10 FOW Techniques: Lures - Plastics and jerkbaits.  We bought two dozen leeches but never opened them.  I do regret not watching a bobber dip below the surface.   Tactics: Cast and retrieve lures in sandy bays, over main lake/secondary rocky points, across rocky flats, between sandy flats, and throughout silt/mud bays with shallow weeds.  A little wind and clouds helped but was not always necessary.  And we had lots of random fish.    Advice:  Get out there and fish.  These patterns should hold for the next week-two.  The fish are aggressively feeding in the shallows where they are finding crawfish, shiners, etc.  A fast moving bait is getting hammered.  I literally can't tell you how many times I saw fish INHALE our presentations at the boat.   The population is healthy.  Catch and keep a few and let a bunch of them go.     Good luck.

I'll take anyone fishing  just let me know when you are around the grand rapids area. I'll even cover gas and bait

Lol, if they had enough enforcement in the first place. They may catch them the rest of the season without the tag!
