Rino,
I'll be up Sat morning. Have a house rented for the weekend. Hopefully we will have enough snow so I can bring the snowmobile to do my venturing out, If I get rid of this cold.Maybe we will see you up there.
Good luck.
I heard they are moving the houses out to the second reef.

I'm heading up early Friday morning hope to be on the Ice at dawn. We are also renting out of RR with a fairly large group. Hope to see you up there Look for my red Chevy Blazer. Also I just bought a light blue portable yesterday so we'll be moving around a bit on the reef to find the biters. smile.gif

Good luck and tight lines,

Ryan

This weekend was kind of slow, however one guy in our party iced a 33" wallhanger. I had one break my line just before we left, other than that I caught 4" perch to my heart's content. Hope you all had better luck.

Rino was this the fish? If not I would love to see a picture of it. If it was a 33" the buddy probably caught the biggest eye to be pulled from this lake in a several years.

THIS WEEKEND WAS A LITTLE BUT SLOWER THAN LAST WEEKEND, BUT I DO HAVE A GREAT STORY ABOUT THE FISH OF A LIFETIME. LETS CALL HIM TONY. HE HAS BEEN COMING UP WITH HIS WORK GROUP FOR 6 YRS AND IT IS USUALLY JUST TIME ON THE TUNDRA WITH THE GUYS . AT 11:30 ON FRI HE DECIDES TO JIG WITH A PERCH JIG FOR THE MANY LITTLE PERCH THAT WILL BE JUMBO SIZE IN 3 YRS. AS HE IS JIGGING FOR THE PERCH HE GETS BIT BY A 31 INCH WALLEYE. PICTURE IS ON THE FRONT PAGE. HE THINKS HE STUCK ON THE ICE BUT THE LINE IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOLE, SO HE IS NOT STUCK ON THE ICE. THEN HE PULLS ON IT AND IT PULLS BACK. HE IS USING A WAX WORM AND A SMALL PERCH JIG. NEVER WOULD YOU THINK THAT A WALLEYE WOULD GO FOR SUCH A SMALL BAIT, BUT IT MUST HAVE PISSED HER OFF. FISH OF A LIFETIME THAT'S ALL I CAN SAY. GREAT JOB GETTING HER IN TONY. HE WAS IN 20 FT JUST OFF OF THE 2ND REEF. IN SHACK 5. NOW I DO NOT WANT A BUNCH OF REQUESTS FOR SHACK 5.

Yep I was with let say Tony. We had a great time!!! I sometimes think that fish always have room for a tiny morsle even if they have been gorging themselfes on perch. It's like eating a thanksgiving meal and someone offering you an M&M - no problem.

Bigeyes - I caught 3 walleyes out on sliver flat saturday - all small - but 2 of them were caught with small perch jig and wax worm. I was surprised to catch them and they were aggressive when they hit it, too. I thought they were nice size perch when they hit but no soap! Just a little info.

Hey, you're bobber's down!!

At the risk of being accused of bragging - the coolest part of that whole deal is that the fish was caught on 2 lb test line!!

Talk about patience!

Unfortuneatly, this fish hasn't been weighed. We didn't have a scale, the resort didn't have a scale, and the taxidermist didn't have a scale. Oh well, it's still a big one.

Just for the record, the fish measured 31 1/4 inches with a steel tape without pinching the tail (it was frozen at that point)

Kewl-don't worry I am sure this is not the first time a 31.25 was called a 33". LOL. That is the way we fisherman were taught to tell the stories right. Nice fish maybe Rick can put it up on the site.

Considering that the fish was froze and he couldnt pinch the tail it is very possible it was 32+ either way a very nice fish.To bad he couldnt find a scale.

Unfortunatly this is one of those years that fishing is tough.Although there are a lot of walleyes around there are a zillion perch down there so the walleyes dont need to go far for a meal.About the only good thing I can say is that there are a lot of big fish around and if your looking for a trophy and not quanity it isnt a bad place to be.
Good Luck

Looking for that fish of a lifetime is the main reason I go to the big lake. Perch fishing should be great out there in a few years to. It will be nice to have something keep for the pan.

I received a very nice photo of this fish from a friend of mine yesterday. If someone would like to post it I'd happy to send it them.

Sorry, I'm not too fancy with all that computer stuff.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
