Storing Ice houses on Mille Lacs...

Shake'em

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have information, or know where I may locate some information about storing a permanent ice house on Mille Lacs year-round? I am looking for resort names, prices, size limitations, parking during summer, etc.

I would like to build a permanent house in the range of 8'x14' to 12'x24', and would like to store it year-round on Mille Lacs, enabling me to use it as sleeping quarters during the summer for open-water fishing, and during the winter for ice fishing.

Thanks,
Shake'em

There are quite a few places that do this on the lake but you are going to find that everyone that does has different accomidations different pricing and plow roads to different areas in the winter.I am not sure how familiar you are with the lake but I would first figure out what part of the lake you want to be on then call some resorts and see if they have any openings then plan on making a trip up there to check them out. This time of year is probably the best time to start checking and some of the best spots can have waiting lists. If you know what part of the lake you want to be on I can give you some names of places but every place is different and what I may like you may not.

It costs us $450 a year just to store our fishhouse (10x20). It's taken to an area across Hwy 169 for the summer. That price includes moving the house on/off the lake, lifting and banking it and summer storage.
To actually use it as a summer cabin you will have to also pay a monthly (space) rent, which will vary from resort to resort...it's not cheap!

Use the Resort Locator above,
scroll down to Mille lacs and start checking them out and contacting your best choices.

some of the resorts will even run an extension cord to your fish house for summer use.

We used to keep our house at Bobs trailer park in Garrison and stay there in the summer but when Bob got out of the ice house buisness we would keep it there and have garison sports which is next door pull out our house. When we got our cabin on Wig-Wam we just decided to store our house at garrison sports because we dident stay at the fish house in the summer anymore. Bobs was a great place to stay in the summer, we had our fishhouse under some big pine trees so It wasent hot. There are fire rings to start a fire and It was cheap. Only 11 dolers a night to sleep there. He also had clean bathrooms you could use, and a fish cleaning house. Im sure you could store your fish house there. He just stopped pulling them out he still stores some. YOu just tell Garrison sports that your house is at Bobs and they drive the 50 yards and get it. The garrison marina is just down the road and the Blue goose is just down the road the other way, Win-Win.

Shakeem: We moved a perm to Macs Twin Bay. The cost is 425.00 per year. Includes taking it out and bringing it back for storage. Any additinal move will cost from 25.00 to 80.00 depending on how far we move it. they will also plow a road to it (in case we ever get snow) and be sure its always accessable. We cannot use it in the summer months however. I believe there is a law regarding the use of it during the summer if you don't have bathroom facilities. Something about running it like a campground but without toilets,,,,no quite sure on that part. I've found Macs to be real good to work with. Hope this helps as well. bill

I have a 8x17 at Brandt's. It runs about $300 per season which includes storage, one move on and off the ice, blocking/banking, and 2 road passes. A bigger house such as yours would run more, although I think the limit is 10x20 unless you work something out.

We are also able to use it as a summer camp. I believe it runs about $3/day. Limited power supplies are avail.

Same as mentioned above...

We have a Perm. out of Macs Twin Bay as well. I HIGHLY recommand Macs. Kevin (owner of Macs) has a GREAT setup. He does a WONDERFUL job keeping the roads plowed to your house and making sure everything is going good while you are up there. They have onsite Propane, Bathrooms, Showers, Bar(not Kevins but it's a bar wink.gif ) The have a website with all the rates on there. The website is listed below:

Email me if you have any questions about Macs I would love to see more FM'er up there!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
